The Position

Mental health is a critical part of overall wellness. With the continuing rise of mental health issues across America, Contra Costa County is looking for standout individuals who are ready to serve our community and be a part of the solution. Mental Health Clinical Specialists are found in various divisions, programs, the County hospital, and health centers. This role is responsible for providing psycho‑therapeutic intervention, treatment, and other mental health services to individuals, groups, and families.

Compensation and Benefits
  • The Board of Supervisors has authorized a 5% salary increase on July 1, 2025.
  • Positions that require bilingual proficiency receive a salary differential of $200 per month.
  • Unit leader assignments earn an additional 5% differential of base salary.
  • Professional clinical supervision is available for individuals gaining post‑degree hours toward their state licensure.
  • Union representation – Mental Health Clinical Specialists are represented by Teamsters Local 856.
  • Incumbents registered with the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW), or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) may receive base pay compensation up to step 13.
  • Incumbents who are licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or a Psychologist issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs may receive monthly base pay compensation up to step 17.

Minimum Qualifications Licenses Required
  • Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicles Operator’s License.
  • Possession of one of the following professional licenses is required: either a valid license issued by the State of California, Board of Behavioral Sciences as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC); or a valid License as a Psychologist issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Psychology.
Substitution

for License
  • Possession of a Master’s Degree in psychology or a closely related behavioral science field from an accredited college or university, and registration with the State of California, Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW), or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC); or
  • Possession of a Doctorate Degree in Psychology from an accredited college, university, or other institution accredited by the California State Board of Psychology.
As a condition of continued employment, incumbents hired with either an AMFT, ASW, APCC, or a Doctorate in Psychology must obtain status as an LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, or a licensed Psychologist, respectively, within the time periods established by the licensing agencies. Selection Process
