Job Summary

The assistant nurse manager is a registered professional nurse who supports and works in conjunction with the nurse manager of a specific unit or service. This role is designed for nurses aspiring to become nurse managers, providing an opportunity to learn additional knowledge and skills through experience and mentoring. The assistant nurse manager must possess strong communication and teamwork skills, mentor others, and lead staff in daily activities, performance reviews, coaching, and counseling.

The assistant nurse manager collaborates with the nurse manager to hold staff accountable for performance standards, measure interventions and outcomes, assist in achieving clinical and financial goals, and support staff recruitment, mentoring, and retention. The role promotes a center of excellence for staff recruitment and retention, clinical and business outcomes, and upholds the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and American Nurses Association standards.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Engages staff in decision making via shared governance processes and partners with others to promote patient‑centered care and service excellence.
  • Supports the nurse manager as designee and provides evolving leadership and management skills for a specific business/clinical unit.
  • Represents the organization positively to the community, building credibility and participating in professional organizations.
  • Supports the charge nurse and other nurse leaders to promote effective running of the care delivery system, ensures clinical processes work as intended, and serves as a resource for all staff, accepting additional responsibilities in the nurse manager’s absence.
  • Assists with budget development and supports monitoring and meeting fiscal outcomes for the work unit.
  • Self‑directed in learning how to apply lean and other quality skills to reduce waste and improve performance of operations and clinical systems of care.
  • Communicates effectively to a diverse workforce, enjoys mentoring others, and learns the necessary skills for progressive nursing management responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with the nurse manager to hold all staff at the point of care accountable for performance standards.
  • Creates opportunities for self and staff growth, implementing a healthy, safe, desirable workplace that ensures retention and recruitment of qualified staff.
  • Promotes staff competency in clinical care delivery, holds self and staff to the highest professional and ethical standards, ensures compliance with corporate standards and clinical competency, and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice and leadership.
  • Works with nurse managers to employ change‑management strategies, instilling curiosity to explore new knowledge and ideas.
  • Seeks opportunities to advance knowledge and skills through formal and informal education, focusing on how health care is financed and how to manage a diverse nursing workforce.
  • Promotes evidence‑based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement; participates in activities such as value analysis in evaluating patient‑care products.
  • Identifies areas of performance improvement for staff and clinical systems, supports nurse‑leader projects to improve them, and ensures service meets or exceeds licensure, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Advances managerial skills to use data and evidence for clinical and operational decision‑making, demonstrating awareness of legal and ethical issues related to patient and staff data, information, and confidentiality.
