Position Summary
Coordinates and manages the care of the CT surgery patient across the continuum of care. Works in collaboration with the CT Surgery providers to ensure comprehensive acute and long‑term care for patients managed by the service. Helps develop the team to meet quality and performance measures for CTSurgery. The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient, reviews the plan of care with the clinical team, and participates in directing that care.
The APP will order/perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, interpret studies, participate in peri‑operative services, and coordinate discharge and follow‑up planning. The APP will work with the team to ensure adherence to protocols and regulatory guidelines, monitor protocol compliance, and participate in the education of residents and medical/APP/nursing students.
- Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master’s degree in Nursing.
- National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
- Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- BLS certification required.
- Department specific: APRNs requesting to be privileged as First Assist in peri‑operative services must complete a CAO approved CNOR Certificate program and obtain a passing grade on the CNOR certification exam.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- CT Surgery, Acute care or cardiology experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as a Medical/Surgical (as applicable) Physician Assistant required.
- Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program required.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine.
- BLS certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department.
- Master’s level education as a Medical/Surgical (as applicable) Physician Assistant preferred.
- CT Surgery, Acute care or cardiology experience preferred.
- Manages comprehensive and individualized care for cardiothoracic surgery patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization and immediate post‑discharge in the ambulatory setting.
- Completes daily rounds: consults and/or pre‑procedure evaluations during weekdays and as applicable, weekends or holidays as determined by specific clinical site and specialty.
- Completes integrated assessments, documents efficient and precise clinical evaluations/plan in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- With the collaboration of faculty or by following established clinical Guidelines and Protocols, orders additional labs and/or diagnostic studies or consults as deemed appropriate.
- Performs, interprets and/or communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Communicates to the patient’s comprehensive care team results of labs/diagnostic studies following established clinical guidelines regarding abnormal findings.
- Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for CTS surgery patients, including teaching, discharge planning and necessary referral to other members of the health care team as necessary.
