DUTIES
  • Responds to emergency calls; administers sobriety test and operates breathalyzer test apparatus; conducts search of offenders returning from work; provides security escort services; and maintains uniform in neat and professional manner.
  • Maintains communication equipment, monitors closed circuit television system, receives security or fire alarms, answers business or emergency telephone, maintains daily log of calls, disseminates police information to patrol units, notifies officials of emergencies, enters data on the computer, and types case reports.
  • Performs accounting tasks for individuals’ money/money orders and personal property.
  • Processes individuals out of jail facility in a timely manner for work details, verifying release orders, completing documents, and returning personal property.
  • Processes individuals into jail facility in a timely manner from daily work details, verifying offenders are on time; searches offenders to insure no contraband or unapproved items are brought back into the facility.
  • Escorts detainees to/from appearances, job sites, medical facilities and other locations.
  • Conducts security checks of jail facility, monitors detainee activity and reports any unusual behavior, and secures and/or physically restrains violent and uncontrollable detainees.
  • Distributes daily meals and ensures trays are removed from cell blocks; conducts routine shakedowns of all cells and prepares written reports.
  • Ensures personal hygiene of detainees and cleanliness of cell areas and accounts for all cleaning supplies and equipment issued to detainees.
  • Responds to grievances and follows appropriate procedures to ensure detainee receives proper medical attention.
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain possession of all required certifications, including First Responder/CPR.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a written test and drug test.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of customary practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the Department, and take authoritative action as situations demand.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to complete required reports within Department deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to effectively apply evidence collection/preservation techniques.
  • Working knowledge of universal health precautions and blood borne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to properly operate all assigned department equipment including computer, read email, schedules, calculator, radio, drug/narcotic identification kit, camera, breathalyzer, and vehicles.
  • Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes, ordinances, and accepted police procedures.
  • Ability to appropriately receive, maintain, and account for inmate articles received.
  • Ability to meet all department hiring and retention requirements, including not posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others in the workplace.
  • Ability to obey all written and verbal orders and directives from the Sheriff and superior officers.
  • Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially irate/violent individuals in precarious situations and take authoritative action.
