Job Title: Driver Education Instructor
Immediate Supervisor: Director of Transportation
General Description: Performs intermediate semi-skilled work in providing driving instruction to students; performs related work as required. Work is performed under the director of transportation and the driver education coordinator.
Essential Functions:
- Provides vehicle education and driver training to students.
- Prepares and maintains detailed records and files.
- Performs pre-trip inspection of driver training cars, and prepares cars for operation.
- Provides each student with driver training educational materials and range layout.
- Ensures that all students have proper permits.
- Provides vehicle service and preventive maintenance procedures and operating instructions.
- Assigns exercises to students, observes student driving and provides direction and instruction at the range.
- Evaluates and grades student operation and advises on needed improvements.
- Escorts, instructs, trains and evaluates students on open highway driving.
- Prepares records and reports on student progress, and provides results to appropriate personnel and/or parents, as required.
- Ensures that vehicles are properly maintained.
- Ensures that driving range is properly secured.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate records and files.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of driver training programs, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and the safe operation of motor vehicles; general knowledge of the principles and methods of instruction; thorough knowledge of vehicle service and preventive maintenance methods and techniques; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish effective working relationships with school staff and students;
ability to operate a motor vehicle properly and safely.
Education and Experience:
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Possession of appropriate driver training certification from the Virginia Department of Education.
