Job Description & How to Apply Below

There are plenty of Tax Manager opportunities where you'll inherit a portfolio, settle into the team and carry on much as the person before you did.

This isn't one of them.

This opportunity exists because the firm is thinking about where it wants to be in five years' time, not just how it gets through the next busy season.

They're looking for someone who wants more than a comfortable management role. Someone who enjoys taking ownership, spotting opportunities and helping build something that's still in its early stages.

If you've ever wanted the chance to shape a tax practice rather than simply work within one, it's worth reading on.

Why they're hiring

The tax team is intentionally small.

At the moment, there are just two tax professionals supporting a much larger assurance practice, which means there is a real opportunity for the right person to have an impact from day one.

This isn't a replacement hire and it isn't a business under pressure to fill a vacancy.

It's a growth hire.

The leadership team knows there is significant potential to continue developing the tax offering, and they're looking for someone who wants to play a meaningful part in that journey.

In fact, they're happy to create space for the right person, even if the timing isn't perfect.

That tells you a lot about the way they hire.

They're far more interested in finding the right long term fit than making a quick decision simply because there's an opening.

The opportunity

Initially, you'll support the firm's existing tax needs, with a particular focus on Form 990 work and advising a broad portfolio of clients.

Over time, the role becomes much more interesting.

You'll have the opportunity to influence how the tax practice develops, work alongside the Partners to identify opportunities for growth and help shape the future direction of the department.

For the right person, that's a rare opportunity.

Most Tax Managers inherit a department that's already been built.

This role gives you the chance to help create what comes next.

The sort of clients you'll work with

One of the things that stood out to me about this firm is the quality of its client base.

They're the sort of clients many accountants associate with much larger firms, yet you'll enjoy the accessibility and collaboration that comes with working in a mid sized practice.

You’ll advise organisations including:

  • Nonprofit organisations
  • Commercial businesses
  • Employee Benefit Plans
  • Pension Plans
  • Women owned businesses
  • Minority owned businesses

The firm is also recognised as one of the largest minority owned CPA firms in the United States and one of the largest audit firms in Maryland.

That reputation has been built over many years through technical excellence, long standing client relationships and Partners who remain actively involved within the accounting profession.

Why this firm feels different

Some firms grow by becoming larger.

Others grow by becoming better.

This feels very much like the second.

With around seventy people, the firm has reached a size where you'll work with complex, high calibre clients, whilst still knowing the people sitting around you.

Partners remain accessible.

Ideas are welcomed.

Success isn't measured by how many hours somebody spends at their desk.

Instead, there's a genuine focus on creating an environment where people can build long term careers.

It's one of the reasons they're looking for someone with ambition.

Not just someone who can do the job, but someone who wants to help shape the future of the business alongside them.

Flexibility built on trust

Hybrid working is part of the culture, but not because it's a policy written into an employee handbook.

New starters spend more time in the office initially, giving them the opportunity to work closely alongside the Partners, build relationships and really understand the business.

Once you're established, flexibility comes naturally.

The leadership team believes that if people are committed, collaborative and using good judgement, they should be trusted to manage their time like professionals.

It's a refreshing approach that reflects the way the firm treats its people.

The practical bits

Alongside the opportunity itself, you'll also receive:

  • Salary between $100,000 and $150,000 depending on experience
  • Annual bonus
  • 168 hours of PTO, increasing with tenure
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield medical and dental plans
  • Multiple healthcare options
  • Health Savings Account
  • The opportunity to help shape and grow a tax practice
Who tends to thrive here?

Usually, it's someone who enjoys responsibility.

Someone who sees opportunities where others see obstacles.

Someone who's ambitious enough to want more than simply maintaining somebody else's client portfolio.

Technical ability matters, of course.

But the leadership team places just as much value on personality, initiative and the desire to build something meaningful.

If you're looking for a role where your ideas will carry as much weight as your technical knowledge, I'd love to tell you more.
