The Outpost Director supports the mission of Camp Shalom by overseeing all Outpost programs and operations. As a member of the camp leadership team, this role exists to ensure Outpost experiences are safe, well‑organized, mission‑centered, and relationally strong.
The Outpost Director provides direct leadership to Outpost counselors and support staff, serves as the primary point of contact for all Outpost off‑site trips, and ensures that food service, transportation, activities, and facilities are thoughtfully coordinated. This role requires strong presence, adaptability, and a servant‑leadership mindset to support both campers and staff throughout the summer.

- Strong organizational and leadership skills with attention to detail and follow‑through.
- Relationally grounded; able to support counselors and support staff through encouragement, accountability, and availability.
- Adaptable, calm, and solution‑oriented when challenges or emergencies arise.
- Demonstrates responsible stewardship of people, resources, food systems, transportation, and facilities.
- Able to comply with and support enforcement of state and county health regulations and ACA accreditation standards.
- Model Camp Shalom’s mission, vision, and core values in word and action.
- Supervise, mentor, and support Outpost counselors and assigned support staff.
- Assist counselors with camper concerns, behavior challenges, and conflict resolution as needed.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and problem‑solving during high‑energy and high‑responsibility Outpost activities.
- Support staff morale and team health through check‑ins, encouragement, and accountability.
- Lead, plan, and execute all Outpost programs and experiences.
- Design, lead, and help implement Outpost activities, challenges, and adventure programming.
- Develop and oversee Outpost theme weeks, ensuring creativity, engagement, and alignment with camp values.
- Support counselors in leading safe, engaging, and age‑appropriate Outpost activities.
- Ensure Outpost programming runs smoothly and adapts as needed due to weather, staffing, or camper needs.
- Coordinate transportation to and from meals when required.
- Work closely with the Food Service Director and food service staff to ensure:
- Accurate headcounts for Outpost meals
- Dietary restrictions and allergies are clearly communicated and accommodated
- Pack‑outs and off‑site meals are prepared, transported, and stored safely
- Monitor food handling and meal distribution during Outpost programs to ensure camper safety and inclusion.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all Outpost off‑site trips.
- Coordinate transportation logistics for Outpost programs, including:
- Vehicle assignments
- Driver communication
- Timely departures and returns
- Ensure all off‑site trips follow Camp Shalom safety policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Maintain clear communication with the Program Director and leadership team regarding Outpost movements and schedules.
- Manage and lead Outpost support staff in assigned areas.
- Assist with daily and weekly staff assignments related to Outpost operations.
- Ensure the Outpost area is properly maintained, organized, and cared for throughout the season.
- Monitor equipment, supplies, and facilities and communicate needs or concerns promptly.
- Ensure Outpost systems align with broader camp operations and leadership expectations.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with counselors, leadership staff, food service, and operations teams.
- Participate in leadership team meetings and collaborative problem‑solving.
- Escalate concerns, incidents, or safety issues appropriately and promptly.
- Assist with parent communication as delegated, particularly related to Outpost programming or off‑site experiences.
