PURPOSE: Girls on the Rise is seeking an Education Coordinator (grades 1 to 12) to oversee academic programs for our girls in grades 1-8 and mentoring/transitional programs for students in grades 9-12. This position reports directly to the Girls on the Rise Program Director and coordinates with all social work, and youth development program staff. This position will play a crucial role in designing academic and literacy support for children, as well as educational coaching to prepare for college/career.
This role requires a strategic and creative individual who can construct program‑specific academic activities as well as community‑based academic support.
- Design and schedule effective Out of School Time Learning opportunities
- Develop and implement literacy interventions to ensure children are reading at grade level based on best practices
- Train and support volunteers in delivering academic support and literacy interventions to children
- Evaluate children’s reading ability using an evidence‑based assessment; design individual academic plans to set goals and monitor progress
- Provide diverse reading experiences and opportunities for children and their families
- Manage academic program implementation.
- Develop and cultivate relationships with school administrators, teachers, and staff on behalf of children and families
- Advise families on school choice options and the out of boundary and lottery process
- Provide support for students as they transition from middle to high school and high school to college/career
- Cultivate collaborative relationships with school staff to ensure children receive the comprehensive education that they deserve
- Communicate frequently with parents and families on participants’ academic progress; monitor participant’s attendance and participation in our Out of School Time, After‑School, and Summer learning programs
- Develop strong relationships within communities
- Provide educational opportunities for parents
- Work with the Program Assistant to track, gather, and evaluate data to monitor children’s academic growth
- Manage academic budget
- 3-5 years as a classroom teacher or 1 year as an instructional coach in an elementary or middle school setting
- Knowledge of special education processes, and the educational landscape of DC
- Strong knowledge of reading, math, and study skills interventions
- Experience with administering academic assessments and developing educational plans
- Strong behavior management and classroom management strategies based on the tiered PBIS model
- Experience in observing and coaching literacy instruction
- Ability to form strong relationships with children, families, volunteers, and school staff
- Willingness to take ownership of long‑term projects; ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Skilled at large group facilitation with children and adults
- Experience working with children and families who come from under‑resourced, urban backgrounds
- Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice for children and families
Bachelor's (Required), Master’s (desired)
Experience- In the classroom - 3 years (Required)
- Instructional coach in Elem./ Middle school setting: 1 year (Required)
- Academic Assessment and education plans: 1 year (Required)
