POSITION:
Secondary Literacy Instruction and Implementation Coach
The Secondary Literacy Instruction and Implementation Coach is a district-based position that supports secondary teachers across multiple school sites. The coach works with teachers, school leaders, and the Coordinator of Literacy to strengthen the implementation of evidence-based literacy practices, high-quality instructional materials, and data-informed instruction.
This position provides non-evaluative coaching, professional learning, classroom support, and implementation guidance to help teachers improve literacy instruction and student outcomes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
The Secondary Literacy Instruction and Implementation Coach will:
* Engage in coaching practices aligned with the WCPS Coaching Model and the MSDE student-centered coaching framework.
* Work with the Coordinator of Literacy to design and deliver professional development for teachers at the school and district levels. Professional learning will focus on evidence-based literacy practices, high-quality instructional materials, and effective implementation of secondary ELA curriculum. Some professional development may occur beyond the regular school day.
* Provide ongoing classroom support and feedback to help teachers understand and effectively implement district-adopted curriculum.
* Work side-by-side with secondary teachers through non-evaluative coaching cycles that include planning, classroom implementation, observation, feedback, and next steps.
* Support teachers in using student data to make instructional decisions, identify areas for growth, and establish goals for coaching cycles.
* Collect, analyze, and use data to identify professional learning needs and determine coaching priorities.
* Facilitate structured Professional Learning Communities that support curriculum internalization, student data analysis, and instructional decision-making.
* Monitor district-approved online platforms and resources to provide relevant student performance data to the Coordinator of Literacy and school leaders.
* Collaborate with teachers to develop lessons grounded in district-adopted curriculum, grade-level standards, complex texts, and evidence-based literacy practices.
* Support teachers in providing students with access to rigorous, text-centered instruction.
* Attend regular training sessions and coaching meetings related to district literacy initiatives.
* Maintain a well-organized coaching schedule across multiple school sites and communicate that schedule proactively.
* Maintain accurate and timely coaching documentation, including coaching logs, observation notes, data records, and action plans.
* Communicate regularly with the Coordinator of Literacy regarding coaching activities and implementation progress. This position reports directly to the Coordinator of Literacy.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must hold a Standard Professional Certificate and have at least five years of successful teaching experience.
The successful candidate should demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
* Science of reading aligned literacy programming and implementation at the secondary level.
* Disciplinary literacy and the instructional shifts associated with the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards for English Language Arts.
* Reading development, assessment, instruction, and intervention at the secondary level within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
* Systematic and explicit instructional practices.
* Instructional coaching, adult learning theory, and implementation science.
* Data analysis as it relates to implementation, action planning, coaching cycles, professional learning, and PLC facilitation.
The successful candidate must also demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple school sites, manage a dynamic coaching schedule, communicate proactively, and maintain thorough coaching documentation.
Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are required. Proficiency with Microsoft applications and Apple devices is desired.
DUTY YEAR AND SALARY:
This is a 198-day position. Salary is based on the appropriate teachers' scale.
