Job SummaryPerforms direct non-violent crisis intervention strategies and techniques for students exhibiting a variety of disruptive and/or aggressive behavior. The role involves implementing general and student‑specific instructional plans, de‑escalating, monitoring, and controlling behavior, and using positive reinforcement to help students achieve goals.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities- Works individually or with small groups to implement instructional programs, plans, and activities.
- Observes for potential behavioral issues in the classroom or adjacent areas, assesses situations, and reports to the Crisis Intervention Specialist.
- Uses intervention techniques to help students remain in their regular classroom when needed.
- Responds to disruptive and/or aggressive behavior with appropriate de‑escalation protocols.
- Employs physical therapeutic techniques as necessary to control student behavior.
- Monitors students’ behavior to keep them on task and redirects to appropriate behavior.
- Maintains logs/records of students moved to/out of regular classroom areas.
- Recommends return to regular classroom after emotional crises.
- Provides verbal praise and recognition upon return to class.
- Documents progress toward goals and reports data to the Crisis Intervention Specialist and professional staff.
- Performs other related duties within the same classification or lower.
- Education: High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate. Requirement of 48 college credit hours or a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment for Title I schools.
- Experience: Training and/or experience in human development, child psychology, counseling, special education, physical education, or a related field (preferred).
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods, strategies, and techniques.
- Patience, courtesy, tact, and good judgment required to manage difficult students.
- Ability to establish effective and cooperative working relationships with staff.
- Ability to plan and follow assignments independently.
- Ability to employ diverse teaching styles for varied learners.
- Proficiency in communicating with diverse populations.
- Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., video/web conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment. For Title I schools a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment (in lieu of 48 college credits) is required.
