Job Description:
Serves as a coach and leader for teachers as they implement instruction. Under the direction of the school principal, plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. Instructs and supervises students in a variety of school-related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes using multiple data sources. Acts as a liaison between the school building and curriculum office(s). Develops and provides relevant professional development.
Performs other duties as assigned. Department Chair positions and candidates are selected and renewed on a year-to-year basis.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
- Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
- Plan and implement instructional programs that adhere to system-wide goals and priorities and meet the needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Prepare and document appropriate lesson plans based upon adopted curricula to teach instructional objectives.
- Create an instructional environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Communicate standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents; meet with students and parents.
- Maintain complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records; monitor and assess students’ academic progress.
- Oversee appropriate use and care of textbooks, instructional materials, facilities, and equipment.
- Collaborate with school administrators, other teachers, para educators, parents, and community members in the education of students.
- Serve as an instructional leader in implementing, coordinating, and overseeing curriculum.
- Serve as a liaison between the school building and curriculum office(s).
- Serve as a coach for teachers as they implement instruction.
- Provide leadership in preparation for Maryland state testing programs.
- Build trusting relationships with teachers; engage in conversation, reflection, and inquiry around teaching practices.
- Act as a content and pedagogical expert in the observation process and/or provide support with content experts or curriculum offices.
- Assist teachers in analyzing multiple sources of student data and designing differentiated instructional programs to meet the needs of all students.
- Oversee and ensure that appropriate documentation is accurately maintained in compliance with guidelines for the content area(s).
- Serve as a change agent who promotes and fosters a professional learning culture grounded in adult learning theory and research-based instructional strategies.
- Collaborate to ensure work is aligned to the School Progress Plan and the Superintendent’s priority areas.
- Work with the department budget and facilitate requests for needed supplies; manage and maintain inventory to ensure materials are available for instruction.
- Attend ongoing content and leadership training, staff meetings, and serve on various committees.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
- Three years’ teaching experience (specialized areas such as guidance, speech pathologist, psychologist, PPW, etc.).
- Possession of a Maryland Educator Professional Certificate appropriate to the area of assignment.
- OR possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Educator Professional License appropriate to the area of assignment.
- Possession of a Maryland Educator Advanced Professional Certificate or Advanced Professional License is preferred.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of pedagogy, curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials and equipment, current issues and trends in content area.
- Skills in instructing students, preparing and implementing lesson plans, communicating with students, parents, administrators, and others.
