Reports To: School Principal, Assistant Principal, Supervisor of Special Education

Salary Range: $56,749 - $149,358

Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher (BDP) will be assigned to work at Plum Point Middle School within the Behavior Development Program. This role involves providing services to students in the regional BDP program and within the general education setting, fostering an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and behavioral development. Responsibilities include supervising students in various school-related settings, monitoring and evaluating student outcomes, developing instructional and behavioral plans, collaborating with service providers, and maintaining accurate records.

Education,

Certification, and Experience
  • Professional teaching certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education in the appropriate field of education, or a conditional degree certificate from the same department.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
  • Experience working with children exposed to trauma, with mental health challenges, or exhibiting externalizing behaviors.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of current classroom technology.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and appropriate strategies for working with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to administer and interpret educational assessment instruments and results.
  • Understanding of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process and ability to write appropriate IEPs.
  • Knowledge of the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) process and experience developing and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
  • Understanding of the general education curriculum and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.
  • Effectiveness in interpersonal skills when working with diverse groups of parents, professionals, students, teachers, administrators, and community agencies.
  • Problem‑solving ability, informed decision‑making, and effective communication with stakeholders during daily routines and stressful situations.
  • Data interpretation to adjust instruction, write goals, objectives, and communicate progress.
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks similar to the responsibilities listed below.

Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties
  • Plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for students.
  • Supervise students in a variety of school‑related settings.
  • Earn and maintain crisis management training and related certifications.
  • Monitor and evaluate student outcomes and progress.
  • Write appropriate IEPs and complete associated paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with staff to conduct FBAs and develop BIPs.
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials for all students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, instructional assistants, building administrators, and central office staff.
  • Participate in staff development programs as directed.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures.
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain regular, on‑time attendance.
  • Serve on special committees.
  • Work flexibly and work under stress while meeting all deadlines.
  • Provide flexible hours as necessary, including attending meetings, managing crisis situations, and participating in professional development outside the scheduled school day and year.
Other Duties

Perform related work as required or assigned by the principal, designee, or supervisor of Special Education.
