Overview of Role

CSM is looking for a dynamic individual who can implement the comprehensive mission of a community college by assessing, documenting, and improving student learning through instruction. Adjunct faculty are hired on an as‑needed basis. The college has a significant need for passionate adjunct faculty for our Early College program, teaching face‑to‑face classes between 8:15 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., two to four days a week.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching Functions:
    • Plan, organize, and instruct courses at the College of Southern Maryland campus, center, or clinical location assigned.
    • Ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled; communicate all absences and changes to the Course or Program Coordinator.
    • Maintain a high level of subject expertise and stimulate enthusiasm for the subject.
    • Plan each unit or lesson to make each class meaningful.
    • Ensure each program/class contains essential curricular components, appropriate content and pedagogy, and remains current.
    • Teach all classes according to an approved course syllabus for the required duration.
    • Study and utilize students’ learning styles to facilitate the best teaching and learning situations.
    • Incorporate instructional technologies in delivery as appropriate.
    • Maximize learning opportunities for each student.
    • Keep students informed of course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.
    • Provide prompt grading of papers and other work to keep students informed of progress throughout the semester or term.
    • Show genuine concern for each student through individual conferences, as needed.
  • Administrative Functions:
    • File an appropriate course syllabus for each course taught with the program coordinator and the HEA administrative assistant.
    • Ensure each course section is web‑enhanced.
    • Use available college online resources (home page, syllabi posting, grade book, etc.).
    • Use the college Group Wise email system for professional communication with students, faculty, division chair, and other personnel with a response time of 48–72 hours.
    • Inform the Course or Program Coordinator of any student concerns or conduct violations within 48 hours of the incident.
    • Maintain accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records.
    • Conduct class evaluations and complete other college evaluations in accordance with college policy.
    • Submit academic reports and other documentation in a timely manner.
    • Attend all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by college officials.
    • Become thoroughly familiar with all college policies and procedures and comply with them.
    • Become familiar with the Faculty Handbook.
    • Convey college‑related information to students in a timely manner as requested by college officials.
  • Program Improvement:
    • Participate in program and curriculum review, development, and student learning outcomes assessment initiatives.
    • Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including classroom and laboratory equipment, to the Course Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Division Chair or designee.
    • Make suggestions to improve the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the college.
  • Professional Development:
    • Keep informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities; submit continuing education records to the Program Coordinator and/or HEA Administrative Assistant.
