Position: ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION TEACHER
Location: Calvert High School
Starting Date: Immediately
Position Summary: The Alternative Education Teacher will instruct students who have difficulty functioning in the regular classroom setting. The teacher will be responsible for providing the prescribed instructional programs, creating an environment and activities that nurture the development of improved self‑concept and self‑esteem, and preparing students to return to their assigned school with improved behavior, academic achievement, and attendance.
Reports To: Principal or designee, Director of Student Services
Education, Certification and ExperienceAt the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:
- A professional teaching certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education in the appropriate field of education.
- A conditional degree certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education in the appropriate field of education as outlined in Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).
- At least three years of successful teaching experience preferred.
- Ability to understand and communicate with both verbal and written skills.
- Satisfactory evaluations and demonstrated mastery of essential teaching skills.
- Other alternatives to the above qualifications as Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students.
- Provides social skills and behavior modification activities.
- Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.
- Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community.
- Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet student needs.
- Creates an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of children.
- Provides students with the skills to successfully return to their original placement.
- Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
- Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities for an individualized instructional program.
- Collaborates with regular education staff regarding instructional accommodations and modifications.
Job Duties
Other duties include but are not limited to performing related work as required or assigned by the principal or Director of Student Services.
Physical DemandsPosition requires significant periods of standing and walking in a typical school environment.

Terms of EmploymentTen (10) month position; salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, based on the Calvert County Public Schools teacher salary schedule. Direct deposit is encouraged.
FLSA StatusExempt.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include an immediate supervisor.
State law requires criminal background investigation and fingerprinting for employees hired after October 1, 1986 who will have contact with school children. Current employees of Calvert County Public Schools are exempt.
