Position Summary

The Instructional Assistant 2 will provide instructional, behavioral, and social‑emotional support services to help achieve a well‑organized, smoothly functioning class and school environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resources. The role includes working with students with disabilities in both special education and general education classrooms to support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Education,

Certification, and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Experience working with children with disabilities and managing externalizing behaviors (preferred)
  • Earn and maintain non‑violent Calvert County Public School crisis management training (includes Crisis Prevention Intervention, trauma‑informed care, and related trainings as required)

  • Ability to operate various office machines and instructional technology
  • Ability to follow a flexible schedule and adapt to various environments

  • Demonstrated ability to problem‑solve, make informed decisions, and communicate effectively with all stakeholders when presented with stressful situations
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize tasks
  • Other acceptable alternatives as determined by the school district
Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties
  • Provide instructional, behavioral and social‑emotional supports and services to students with disabilities
  • Assist individual students in need of special attention in academics, social, emotional, behavioral support, and activities of daily living
  • Assist with the provision of specially designed instruction and consistent implementation of student behavior intervention plans
  • Assist with the implementation of and collection of data for IEPs and/or BIPs
  • Deliver academic interventions and proactive behavioral supports/interventions
  • Intervene in crisis situations, including non‑violent CPI use when necessary
  • Assist students with personal hygiene and activities of daily living
  • Work with groups of students to reinforce material introduced by the teacher
  • Collaborate with educators and providers to implement IEPs across settings
  • Perform clerical duties
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and other teacher‑planned supports
  • Set up and operate instructional technology and laboratory equipment
  • Assist teacher with classroom routines and instruction
  • Participate in professional learning opportunities
  • Provide periodic class coverage in the absence of a classroom teacher
  • Positively interact with others and report to work promptly daily
  • Meet deadlines and fulfill other duties assigned by the building principal

Physical and Psychological Conditions/Demands

Position is performed in a typical school environment with significant periods of standing and walking. May require physical confrontation and assistance with students who exhibit aggressive behaviors. May involve lifting or assisting with lifting students.
