NHS Marching Band Color Guard Instructor (Job # 3622)

Calvert County Public School District, Northern High School, Owings, Maryland

Starting Date: Immediately

Reports to: School Principal

Job Summary: The marching band front instructor represents the principal to ensure the marching band reflects the school community. The instructor works with administration, band director, students, and adjudicators to achieve student success and public performance excellence. Activities include band camp, after‑school rehearsals, weekend events, and performances. The instructor enforces policies and guidelines of the Board of Education, the school, the Maryland Music Educators Association, and the Tournament of Bands Association.

  • Demonstrated management, leadership, and human relations skills
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in decision making
  • Proven ability to carry an assignment to completion
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing duties similar to those listed below
  • Additional qualifications acceptable to Calvert County Public Schools

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Select uniforms for front members to coordinate with the show concept.
  • Attend rehearsals, band camps, and performances, actively assisting students in sectional and whole‑group rehearsals.
  • Teach color guard basics, including flag footwork and marching footwork.
  • Choreograph and teach the routine for the show.
  • Assign equipment responsibilities and allocate equipment to students.
  • Collaborate with the band director to coordinate flags and props.
  • Work with the drill writer to verify color guard positioning in each musical selection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Band Director that support a successful program.

Other Duties: Perform related work as required or assigned by the Principal and/or Athletic Director.

Physical Demands: Significant standing and walking in a typical school environment.

Terms of Employment: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current year. Extra Pay for Extra Duty and Longevity Pay Schedule apply.

Salary: $1,114 to $2,658 stipend.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Evaluation: Performance evaluated per Calvert County Public Schools policy.

Effective Date of Position: School Year , Fall Season (8/12/2026 - 11/13/2026).

This position remains open until filled. Interviews may begin as early as April 13, 2026. References must be work‑related and include an immediate supervisor.

Federal law requires new employees to complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I‑9) in person before starting. Employment is conditional upon completion of a drug screen. Current employees of Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
