Location: Northern Middle School, Owings, Maryland

Starting Date: Immediately

Pay Rate: Scale 8: $21.84/hr – $27.42/hr

Job Summary

The Instructional Assistant 2 will provide instructional, behavioral, and social‑emotional support services to create a well‑organized, smoothly functioning classroom and school environment where students can fully utilize the instructional program and available resources. The Assistant will work with students with disabilities in both special and general education classrooms to support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Education, Certification, and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities and managing externalizing behaviors is preferred.
  • Obtained and maintained non‑violent Calvert County Public School crisis management training (CPI, trauma‑informed care, COMAR law training related to restraint, seclusion, exclusion, risk of restraint, and documentation of crisis events), Ukeru crisis intervention training, restorative practices training, academic research‑based intervention training, and other trainings and certifications required by the Director of Special Education, principal, or assistant principal.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties
  • Provide instructional, behavioral, and social‑emotional supports and services to students with disabilities.
  • Assist children needing special attention in academics, social, emotional, behavioral supports, and activities of daily living.
  • Assist with provision of specialized instruction and implementation of the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) under teacher direction.
  • Assist in implementation and data collection required by the student’s IEP and/or BIP.
  • Deliver academic interventions and implement proactive behavioral supports/interventions.
  • Intervene in crisis situations, using non‑violent CPI when needed.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene, toileting, and activities of daily living.
  • Work with groups of students to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
  • Collaborate with educators and providers to implement IEPs across settings.
  • Assist individual children with special attention.
  • Perform clerical duties.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and other student supports.
  • Set up, operate, or maintain instructional technology, laboratory equipment, and computer programs.
  • Assist teacher with classroom duties, routines, and instruction.
  • Participate in professional learning opportunities.
  • Provide periodic class coverage when a teacher is absent.
  • Positive interaction with others.
  • Report to work promptly each day.
  • Meet deadlines.
  • Other duties as reasonably assigned.
Other Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties

Perform related work as required or assigned by the building principal or designee.

Physical and Psychosocial Conditions/Demands

Position is performed in a typical school environment. Requires significant standing and walking. May involve physical and psychological confrontations with students exhibiting aggressive behaviors. Assistants assigned to serve students with physical disabilities may be required to lift or assist with lifting students during the instructional day.

Evaluation

Performance evaluated in accordance with Calvert County Public Schools policy on evaluation.
