Nature of Work

This is a professional position to meet instructional goals by delivering instructional programs effectively to ensure student achievement.

Essential Functions

  • Possess excellent time‑management skills, take initiative, and make decisions within assigned responsibility in a challenging, fast‑paced environment, while remaining flexible in work responsibilities and hours.
  • Possess knowledge of St. Mary’s County Public Schools programs, policies, and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan instruction that enriches and extends classroom instruction and integrates the Library Media Standards.
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate information literacy skills into all curricular areas.
  • Plan and coordinate the instructional program in accordance with the current curricula provided by the Maryland State Department of Education and aligned with the SMCPS scope and sequence.
  • Guide students to develop comprehension skills through exposure to a variety of reading material and to comprehend, interpret, analyze, and evaluate informational sources and literature.
  • Teach SMCPS Network Usage Standards.
  • Provide care and protection of school property.
  • Supervise student activity on school property.
  • Supervise supporting clerical and technical staff assigned to the media center.
  • Manage the circulation and cataloging system for library media materials.
  • Utilize the automated circulation system to check out materials, print reports, and manage overdue materials and fines for Destiny Library Manager and Destiny Resource Manager.
  • Instruct students and staff in the use of productivity, presentation software, and multimedia productions in the context of content area instruction.
  • Provide instruction and demonstration lessons illustrating the appropriate use of technology, materials, strategies, and techniques for effective use of new technologies in various content areas.
  • Assist staff as needed in information retrieval and in the use of electronic resources.
  • Assist teachers in individualizing instruction in media outcomes for special populations such as ESL, special education, and gifted/talented.
  • Provide in‑service instruction on the use of library media materials, programs, and equipment to faculty and staff.
  • Collaborate with principals, school improvement teams, and instructional supervisors to plan for the appropriate use of educational technology.
  • Prepare plans for keeping the library resources collection current.
  • Compile a collection development policy based on the St. Mary’s County Library Media Program and site‑related data.
  • Maintain accurate records as required for state, county, and school reports.
  • Create a school library media center climate that encourages students and faculty to take full advantage of its resources.
  • Work with the principal and/or Supervisor of Library Media regarding the library media budget based on circulation and collection statistics.
  • Solicit feedback from all users to assist in program evaluation and the continuous improvement of services.
  • Coordinate, along with school administration, the overall implementation of use of computer hardware and software in the school.
  • Serve as primary technology contact.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance.
  • Assist students with learning activities.
  • Take part in professional development activities.
  • Cooperate with students and staff.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with students, staff, and parents.
  • Maintain current lesson plans.
  • Perform other related and non‑related job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher and eligibility for licensure as a library media specialist.
  • Three (3) credits in special education.
Term of Employment

Full‑time ten‑month position.
