Qualifications
  • Must be eligible for State of Maryland Certification as a Teacher.
  • Hold a Bachelor's Degree or Higher.
  • A minimum of 30 college credits in American Sign Language and/or Education.
  • Prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications may be accepted by the Board.
Job Goal

The job of the Teacher of American Sign Language is to provide instruction to students in American Sign Language as well as to introduce students to elements/characteristics of the deaf culture. This teacher must maintain a positive classroom environment. This teacher shall enforce State rules and regulations and District policies and procedures to ensure the effective implementation of the educational program.

Performance

Responsibilities
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to student maturity and interests.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and provides written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides learning toward curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, projects, etc., and communicating them to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media that suit the physical limitations of the location and the needs of the learners.
  • Strives to implement the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives through instruction and action.
  • Assesses students' accomplishments regularly and provides progress reports as required.
  • Protects students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct, developing reasonable classroom behavior procedures, and maintaining order fairly.
  • Is available to students and parents outside the instructional day for education-related purposes when reasonably required.
  • Plans and supervises assignments for instructional assistants and volunteers, and cooperatively evaluates their performance with department heads.
  • Maintains and improves professional committees as required.
Terms of Employment

Ten (10)-month position. As outlined in the Agreement Between the Kent County Teachers Association and the Board of Education of Kent County.

Salary

Teacher's Lane. Step established by the Superintendent.

Union

Kent County Teachers Association.

FLSA Status

Exempt.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
