Job DescriptionPosition Summary: Under the direction of the school principal and Head Start Coordinator, plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. Creates an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals. Supervises and evaluates student progress, communicates with students, parents, staff, and community, and maintains appropriate records.
Reports To: School Principal and Head Start Coordinator
Education, Certification, and Experience- Hold or be eligible for one of the following:
Maryland Professional Eligibility Certificate (Standard or Advanced), Maryland Conditional Degree Certificate, baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education, or equivalent coursework with experience teaching preschool‑age children. - Alternate qualifications acceptable as determined by Calvert County Public Schools.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, and community members.
- Understanding and ability to maintain rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks related to the responsibilities described below.
- Create a classroom environment that supports student voice, agency, and safety.
- Develop classroom routines and rituals that foster a culture of learning and manage behavior with evidence‑based strategies.
- Maintain order and discipline conducive to effective learning, ensuring safety of students and facilities.
- Plan and prepare lessons individually and collaboratively aligned with Calvert County curricula, including clear learning goals and instructional materials.
- Apply Head Start Performance Standards, component plans, and Developmentally Appropriate Practices.
- Maintain comprehensive portfolio assessments for each child, including weekly observations and developmental assessments.
- Incorporate research‑based strategies and instructional technology.
- Adjust instructional plans to meet the needs of every student regardless of background or socio‑economic status.
- Lead activities promoting physical, mental, and social development, including imaginative play.
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and outcomes.
- Prepare, administer, and correct evaluations and record results.
- Continuously improve instructional skills and stay current with educational research and technology.
- Assign instructional assistants and volunteers to purposeful tasks.
- Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community.
- Collaborate with parents and students on academic, social‑emotional, and behavioral progress; conduct home visits and conferences.
- Participate in Head Start and CCPS staff meetings, professional learning sessions, board and parent meetings.
- Assist in daily health and environmental checks and monthly health discussions.
- Submit required forms and records promptly (e.g., lesson plans, time sheets, meal reports).
- Supervise students in various school‑related settings.
- Teach summer school as needed.
- Serve on special committees and attend special events such as open houses.
- Work flexible hours, maintain regular attendance, and meet deadlines under stress.
Perform related work as required or assigned by the school principal or designee.
Physical DemandsRequires significant periods of standing and walking within a typical school environment.
Unusual DemandsMay entail a flexible work schedule.
FLSA StatusExempt.
Terms of EmploymentEleven (11) month position (208 days); $38.67 per hour; employment is contingent upon continued grant funding. Employees are at‑will and encouraged to enroll in automatic payroll deposit.
EvaluationPerformance evaluated in accordance with Calvert County Public Schools and Head Start policies.
Effective Date of Position2026‑2027 school year.
