Purple Star School Liaison

The Purple Star School Liaison serves as the school's lead coordinator for the Maryland Purple Star Schools Program and works collaboratively with the principal to support military-connected students and families. The liaison is responsible for organizing, implementing, monitoring, and sustaining the school's Purple Star initiatives and ensuring compliance with all program requirements. The liaison will serve as the primary point of contact for military-connected students and families, coordinate transition supports, oversee awareness activities, coordinate staff training, maintain required documentation, and lead the completion of the Purple Star application and renewal process (every two years).

Experience:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, community partners, military organizations, and school staff.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage programs and coordinate multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Experience supporting student engagement, school climate initiatives, or family outreach programs preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks related to the duties and responsibilities listed below.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties:

  • Serve as the school's designated Purple Star School Liaison and point of contact for military-connected students and families.
  • Collaborate with the principal to lead the completion and submission of the school's initial Purple Star application and subsequent renewal applications every two years.
  • Maintain evidence and documentation necessary to demonstrate continued compliance with Purple Star Schools Program requirements.
  • Coordinate identification and tracking procedures for military-connected students within the school.
  • Facilitate student transition support for newly enrolled military-connected students and their families.
  • Plan and oversee a peer-led transition or student ambassador program to assist military-connected students in acclimating to the school community.
  • Coordinate activities and events that recognize and celebrate military-connected students and military families, such as Month of the Military Child, Purple Up! Day, Veterans Day, etc.
  • Collaborate with school staff to ensure military-connected students are aware of available academic, extracurricular, and social-emotional supports.
  • Maintain and update the school's Purple Star webpage and ensure resources for military-connected students and families are easily accessible and current.
  • Coordinate professional learning opportunities and awareness activities for school staff related to the unique experiences and needs of military-connected students.
  • Develop partnerships with local military installations, community agencies, veteran organizations, and family support programs to enhance services available to students and families.
  • Attend district training and workshops related to the Purple Star Schools Program as appropriate.
  • Work with school leadership to identify opportunities to strengthen support and services for military-connected students beyond minimum program requirements.
  • Provide periodic updates to the principal regarding program activities, student participation, and progress toward Purple Star designation and renewal.
  • Maintain records of program activities, communications, and evidence required for program monitoring and renewal.
  • Other Duties:
    Performs related work as required or assigned by the Principal.

    Physical Demands:
    Position requires significant periods of standing, walking, and participation in school and community events and is performed in a typical school environment.

    Unusual Demands:
    Occasional evening activities, family engagement events, student orientation activities, and community partnership meetings may be required.
