Position Summary

Under the direction of the school principal and the supervisor of special education, plans and provides specially designed instruction, supports, and services for students with disabilities. Develops appropriate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to meet academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs. Provides a positive atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. Supervises students in various school settings, monitors and evaluates outcomes, communicates with students, parents, staff, and community.

Designs, selects, adapts, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet individual students’ needs and maintains appropriate records and follows required regulations.

Reports To: School Principal, Supervisor of Special Education

Education, Certification and Experience
  • Maryland Professional Eligibility Certificate, Standard Professional Certificate, or Advanced Professional Certificate in the appropriate field of education.
  • Maryland Conditional Degree Certificate as outlined in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain rapport with diverse cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
  • Working knowledge of current classroom technology.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and evidence‑based practices for working with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to administer and/or interpret educational assessment instruments and results.
  • Understanding of special education regulations and the IEP process.
  • Ability to write appropriate IEPs and deliver specially designed instruction.
  • Knowledge of the general education curriculum and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.
  • Interpersonal skills when working with parents, other professionals, students, teachers, administrators, and community agency representatives.
  • Ability to interpret data to adjust instruction, write goals and objectives, and communicate progress.
  • Demonstrated success in tasks akin to the responsibilities listed below.
Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties
  • Plans and provides specially designed instruction, supports, and services for students with disabilities.
  • Develops appropriate IEPs to meet academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs.
  • Creates a classroom environment that fosters student voice, agency, and safety.
  • Develops classroom routines and rituals that support a culture of learning and uses evidence‑based strategies to manage conflict.
  • Maintains order and discipline, ensuring a safe learning environment.
  • Plans and prepares lessons aligned with Calvert County curricula with clear learning goals.
  • Incorporates research‑based strategies, evidence‑based practices, and instructional technology.
  • Selects, adapts, and modifies instructional materials aligned to curricula and student needs.
  • Completes IEP paperwork accurately and timely.
  • Monitors and evaluates student progress using formative and summative assessments and IEP data.
  • Prepares, administers, and corrects evaluations and assessments, recording results and writing assessment reports.
  • Improves knowledge base in current trends, research, methodology, technology, cultural responsiveness, and interdisciplinary connections.
  • Plans purposeful assignments for instructional assistants and volunteers.
  • Collaborates with general education teachers for IEP implementation.
  • Monitors appropriate use of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
  • Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Serves as an IEP team member and case manager for designated students.
