Job Description I. Position SummaryProvides leadership for Elementary English Language Arts instruction, ensuring students develop advanced literacy, writing, and analytical skills aligned with college and career readiness expectations.
II.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Chief Academic Officer, Superintendent, or designee.
Elementary English Language Arts (ELA) K-5
- Oversees alignment and implementation of elementary ELA curriculum.
- Provides instructional coaching and observation support.
- Leads writing across the curriculum initiatives.
- Oversees MSDE and local ELA testing, instructional preparation, and data analysis.
- Supports elementary literacy interventions within MTSS.
- Designs and delivers elementary ELA professional learning.
- Supports instructional technology integration.
- Provides budget and staffing input.
- Collaborates on ELA-related instructional grants.
Multilingual Learners (ML/EL) K-12
- Oversees instructional programming and service delivery for Multilingual Learners/English Learners in accordance with state and federal requirements.
- Ensures appropriate identification, placement, service models, progress monitoring, and documentation for ML/ELL students.
- Collaborates with principals and instructional supervisors to ensure ML/ELL instructional supports are implemented effectively in classrooms.
- Coordinates translation and interpretation services for the county and schools
- Supports professional learning related to language acquisition, culturally responsive instruction, and equitable access to instruction.
- Master’s degree required;
Doctorate preferred. - A total of five (5) years of experience in elementary English Language Arts instruction and/or instructional leadership at the school or district level.
This experience must include at least two (2) years of direct elementary English Language Arts classroom instruction.
The remaining experience (up to three (3) years) may be fulfilled through a combination of the following:
- Instructional leadership roles (e.g., ELA coach, instructional specialist, assistant principal, principal, or district-level supervisor);
- A master’s degree in English, English Language Arts, elementary Education (English), Curriculum and Instruction, or Educational Leadership;
- National Board Certification in English Language Arts or a closely related developmental band; and/or
- Documented district-level ELA leadership, including curriculum development, literacy/ELA MTSS intervention leadership, or facilitation of ELA-focused professional development.
- Demonstrated experience supporting curriculum implementation, instructional improvement, and data-informed decision-making in elementary ELA.
- Maryland administrative certification required , consistent with current MSDE certification requirements (e.g., Administrator I or Administrator II, or the current MSDE-recognized administrative certification designation).
- Candidates must hold or be eligible to hold Maryland administrative certification in accordance with MSDE regulations.
- Strong knowledge of elementary English Language Arts curriculum, instructional best practices, and assessment.
