Key ResponsibilitiesDesigning, planning, and overseeing the construction of underground tunnels, including managing technical aspects such as soil and rock mechanics analysis, structural design, and construction methods to ensure projects are completed safely, within budget, and to required specifications. Work will often involve large‑scale transportation or infrastructure projects, including highways, railways, and water conveyance systems.

- Oversee the construction process, including selecting appropriate excavation methods (e.g., TBM, Sequential Excavation Method)
- Monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with safety regulations
- Coordinate with contractors and other engineering disciplines
- Apply knowledge of ground mechanics, structural engineering, and construction techniques specific to tunnelling
- Assess potential risks and develop mitigation strategies
- Contribute to design reports, technical specifications, and contract documents
- Develop project timelines and cost estimates
- Manage project budgets and ensure cost‑effective construction
- Liaise with clients and other engineering teams
- Present technical information and project updates to relevant parties
- Demonstrate strong understanding of soil and rock mechanics principles
- Show proficiency in relevant design software
- Provide experience with tunnel construction methods and project management
- Exhibit excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Maintain awareness of safety regulations related to underground construction
- Perform geotechnical investigations to assess soil and rock conditions
- Design tunnel structures, including lining systems, support of excavation (SOE) methods, and ventilation systems
- Utilise specialised software for numerical modelling and stress analysis
- Tunnel ventilation engineer:
Design and manage ventilation systems within tunnels - Tunnel lining engineer:
Focus on the design and installation of tunnel lining segments - TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) engineer:
Expertise in operating and maintaining Tunnel Boring Machines
- A Bachelor degree in an Engineering discipline (preferably Civil, Structural or Mechanical)
- SMSTS trained (Mandatory)
- IOSH Managing Safely in Construction (Preferable but not mandatory)
- CSCS Card
- 3+ years working in an underground environment on Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines
- Previous experience working as the PIC (Person in Charge)
