Overview

Are you interested in research that will make the next generation of U.S. Strategic Systems more survivable, reliable, and credible? We are looking for a Strategic Deterrent Nuclear Survivability Analyst in the System Modeling and Estimation Group within the Force Projection Sector of the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

The ideal candidate will work on complex, multi‑disciplinary problems with a team of experts to offer technical contributions to improve the next generation of U.S. Strategic Systems.

Responsibilities
  • Work with a talented multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Perform modeling and simulation tasks as part of a technical team to understand, evaluate, and characterize nuclear weapon environments and effects.
  • Identify opportunities to inform and analyze system requirements.
  • Produce data and perform analysis of that data.
  • Perform independent analysis of third‑party results and summarize conclusions.
  • Present work and results to technical staff members and management.
  • Expand technical skillset to include additional nuclear hardness and survivability areas.
  • Run third‑party software in a Linux and/or Windows environment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related science/engineering field with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Familiar with radiation environments and the principles of radiation interactions with matter.
  • Familiar with MATLAB and/or other coding platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of data analysis, computational physics, or computational engineering.
  • Strong mathematical and statistical background.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science or Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Familiar with nuclear weapon environments and their effects on systems.
  • Familiar with the natural space environment and its effects on systems.
  • Experience modeling nuclear weapon effects.
  • Experience with electromagnetic pulse theory and system protection.
  • Experience with radiation detection.
  • Hands‑on experience designing, implementing, and optimizing real‑world applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies.
  • Basic understanding of device physics and radiation effects on electronics.
  • Experience modeling or testing radiation effects on electronics including total ionizing dose, dose rate, single event effects, and displacement damage from X‑rays, gamma rays, neutrons, protons, and heavy ions.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance.

Pay Range

Minimum Rate: $85,000 Annually

Maximum Rate: $195,000 Annually
