Coffman Engineers is seeking a highly motivated Fire Protection Engineer with at least four years of experience to join our large FP team of more than 70 nationwide professionals! Our Fire Protection team is fully integrated with Coffman Engineers’ multidisciplinary engineering teams.
You will support your local office Fire Protection Department and provide project support to clients on alternative and renewable energy projects, energy storage, biofuels, battery storage, hydrogen, carbon capture, combined heat and power, microgrids, EV charging, stadiums, high‑rise buildings, hospitals, military and industrial facilities, and manufacturing. Nationwide support may require monthly travel to other Coffman offices or project locations across North America.
Fire protection design services will include automatic suppression system design; fire detection, alarm and mass notification system design; life safety code analysis; passive fire protection analysis; smoke control analysis; facility layout, explosion control; battery storage thermal runaway management; hazard mitigation analysis; emergency response plans;
Fire Marshal coordination; CFD modeling; and general fire protection and life safety concepts and research.
- Perform analysis of existing fire protection systems and design new fire protection systems, including suppression systems, fire detection, gas detection, explosion control, alarm and mass notification systems.
- Perform building and site, fire and life safety code analysis and interpretation.
- Manage effective communication with colleagues, clients and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
- Work with local and state Fire Marshals (AHJs) and Fire Chiefs.
- Collaborate with OEM suppliers for testing and safety systems (fire panels, fire pumps, fire tanks, lithium‑ion batteries, hydrogen equipment, EV charging, fuel storage, carbon capture, etc.).
- Work with stakeholder fire protection teams including electrical utilities, oil and gas companies, manufacturers, developers, power generation operators, and others.
- Lead and manage the internal team to provide well‑coordinated and high‑quality design sets and associated fire protection plans.
- Manage profitability of projects and maintain working relationships with clients.
- Perform research and documentation for internal and external distribution.
- Attend and participate in local and national trade organizations, such as SFPE and NFPA.
- Conduct business development activities, foster long‑term client relationships, and create new ones.
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in engineering from an accredited college or university in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Sciences, or a related engineering field.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license (preferred).
- Minimum of 4 years working experience in the Fire Protection Consulting profession.
- Experience with the current version of AutoCAD and Revit (preferred).
- Excellent verbal, written, organizational, and time‑management skills.
