This position is ideal for a licensed professional who enjoys owning projects end-to-end, partnering closely with internal clients, and seeing their designs move from concept to construction.

If you enjoy solving complex problems in the field, communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, and seeing your designs become reality, this role offers an opportunity to make a visible, lasting impact.

The typical work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This is a grade 33, non-bargaining, exempt position located at Central Services in Rockville.

Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, belonging, and inclusiveness.

  • Designing electrical, lighting, fire alarm, and control systems for new construction and renovation projects.
  • Meeting users to determine electrical requirements for each project, investigating existing conditions, researching existing designs, and advising the college architect of any electrical problems discovered.
  • Signing and sealing plans for submission to the City of Rockville and Montgomery County.
  • Preparing engineering drawings for both in-house and contracted construction work.
  • Managing the permitting process with governmental agencies.
  • Collaborating with the Procurement Department to prepare bids for contracted construction work.
  • Inspecting construction while in process to ensure it is completed in accordance with designs.
  • Project managing and overseeing outside contractors during construction.
  • Reviewing and approving contractor pay application submissions.
  • Providing technical advice on design and construction needs to other college units.
  • Reviewing all engineering drawings, plans, details, and specifications prepared by outside consultants for technical accuracy and coordination.
  • Inspecting engineering systems in existing facilities.
  • Developing capital replacement plans in collaboration with the College Architect and Director of Planning, Engineering and Capital Budgets.
  • Investigating, identifying, and resolving engineering problems associated with electrical, lighting, fire alarm, and control systems.

Required qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of energy conservation and sustainable strategies, electrical and life safety codes, lighting and fire safety alarms, and construction methodologies.
  • Ability to perform photometric calculations for lighting designs.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, or experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
