Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Computer Aided Manufacturing Engineer to develop, optimize, and support CNC and advanced manufacturing processes for innovative defense and aerospace systems. You will create and validate CAM programs, tooling, and fixturing, partner with design engineers to ensure manufacturability, and drive DFM/DFA improvements. In APL's collaborative, mission-driven culture, you'll apply cutting-edge tools, support prototype through low-rate production, troubleshoot complex machining challenges, and help transition designs into reliable, scalable, and cost-effective hardware for critical national security and space missions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize CAM programs for CNC machining of aerospace and defense hardware.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to improve manufacturability and apply DFM/DFA principles.
  • Design tooling and fixturing to support prototype and low-rate production builds.
  • Validate setups, run first-article parts, and troubleshoot machining issues.
  • Document manufacturing processes, work instructions, and best practices.
  • Analyze quality and process data to improve yield, cycle time, and cost.
  • Support transition from prototype development to scalable, repeatable production.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, safety protocols, and export controls.
  • Partner with suppliers and internal shops to resolve technical manufacturing challenges.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies.

Required Skills

  • CAM programming (e.g., Mastercam, NX, Fusion 360)
  • CNC machining (3- to 5-axis mills, lathes)
  • CAD modeling and drawing (e.g., Solid
  • Works, Creo, NX)
  • GD&T and engineering drawing interpretation
  • Fixture and tooling design
  • DFM/DFA for machined and fabricated parts
  • Knowledge of aerospace/defense materials and processes
  • Process documentation and work instructions
  • Statistical process control and basic data analysis
  • ERP/MES familiarity for manufacturing workflows
