Overview
Mayo County Council is seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Archivist. The primary objective of this role is to manage the council’s archives and set up a County Archive for Mayo. This will be done through the development and implementation of an Archival Management System that ensures compliance with relevant archives legislation and GDPR requirements. The Archivist will lead the archiving of pertinent records across all departments within Mayo County Council.
This position also offers the opportunity to work with the Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina, which houses one of Ireland’s most significant collections of historical material.
Mayo County Council maintains an extensive range of archival materials, including records from the local authority, its predecessor bodies and private collections. The service operates under Section 80 of the Local Government Act, 2001, which mandates local authorities to manage, preserve, and provide access to local records and archives for the public, council staff, and other stakeholders.
The Archivist will play a key role in fulfilling these statutory responsibilities and will be instrumental in coordinating and supporting the implementation of the Council’s Records Management Policy, in alignment with the Local Authority National Retention Policy.
QualificationsEach Candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:
- (a) hold a recognised qualification in Archival Studies
- (b) have relevant satisfactory experience in archival work
