The Position

The Fire/EMS Department is seeking a detail-driven part-time Background Investigator to join our team. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced professional—particularly those with a background in law enforcement, military investigations, or public safety screening. In this role, you’ll play a critical part in safeguarding the integrity of our hiring process by conducting thorough investigations into candidates applying for high-trust positions for Fire/EMS applicants.

About The Agency

The mission of the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is to serve our communities with excellence by providing the highest quality of risk reduction, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical, and all-hazards response services to enhance the quality of life in Prince George’s County.

Examples of Work
  • Gathers/obtains relevant information and data through approved agency techniques/procedures (e.g., interviews, direct observation, on‑site field visits, research of records and documents) as part of the investigative process, which will assist in the hiring of qualified applicants
  • Notes all pertinent facts and records interview facts
  • Conducts full‑scope pre‑employment background investigations for firefighter and EMS personnel applicants
  • Review and verifies personal, employment, military, financial, driving, and criminal records
  • Interviews applicants, former employers, references, neighbors, and others to determine character, suitability, and qualifications
  • Compiles detailed investigative reports with findings and recommendations
  • Coordinates with HR, recruiting staff, and command personnel to ensure timely processing
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and handles sensitive information with discretion
  • Ensures all investigations comply with department policy, local laws, and applicable regulations
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in programs involving investigative and social relations skills such as criminology, law enforcement, business, or public administration, one of the social sciences or related fields
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Experience with research methods and report preparation and presentation
  • Experience performing investigations and providing investigatory reports
  • Experience preparing comprehensive narrative reports
  • Previous investigations experience in public safety
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Successfully pass pre‑employment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non‑standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave
