Job Description

A Mid/Senior-level Scrum Master is needed to join a high performing agile team using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) to support a large, complex, fast-paced technical program. The program uses Dev Ops practices, a robust development/test/production environment, Behavior Driven Development (BDD), test automation tools, and a full suite of collaboration tools to support system engineering, development, test, integration, and operations. The program injects new technology and adds advanced capabilities while continuing to support an on-going mission and operational system.

The Scrum Master will facilitate one complex agile team or several smaller teams as part of a larger Agile Release Train (ART) delivering value to the customer using SAFe. The role includes educating and coaching teams in Scrum, Scrumban, or Kanban, removing impediments, fostering high-performing team dynamics, continuous flow, and relentless improvement. The Scrum Master will work with team members, other Agile Scrum Masters, and support personnel to ensure commitments at the Program Increment (PI) Planning are met, facilitate horizontal communication, and lead discussions to analyze or triage issues and implement process improvements.

Strong attention to detail and focus on task completion are critical.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Facilitate self-organizing team(s) to ensure progress against PI commitments.
  • Protect the team from scope creep during PI execution.
  • Remove impediments and coordinate with Release Train Engineers on solutions.
  • Help team members communicate, coordinate, and cooperate.
  • Coach, support, and enforce Scrum process and other process rules.
  • Ensure the team understands the Definition of Done and how to meet it.
  • Coordinate with other teams on the Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and communicate status to management.
  • Work with Product Owners to review and prioritize features.
  • Lead and facilitate SAFe ceremonies, including Sprint Planning, Sprint Reviews (demos), Sprint Retrospectives, and PI Planning.
  • Work with Product Owners and System Engineers to develop User Stories that meet feature acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain and generate information radiators for the teams.
  • Collect and share team metrics, determine when new metrics are needed, and develop improvements in metrics.
  • Coach teams on Agile and Scrum principles with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Observe team dynamics and coach the team to improve productivity; promote teamwork to achieve Sprint goals; lead teams toward Agile maturity.
  • Create a fun, sharing, and learning environment; experiment with ideas to improve delivery (e.g., pair programming, cross-functional training).
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and at least 8 years of relevant work experience (additional relevant experience may be substituted for a degree).
  • At least 4 years of experience as a Scrum Master for a software development or similar technical team, preferably full-time.
  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM), SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) or similar agile certification (PMI-ACP).
  • Significant hands-on experience with agile project management tools (e.g., Jira, Version One, Rally, IBM RTC).
  • At least 4 years of experience on a large, technical program with varied systems and groups in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and time management skills.
