Structural Steel FitterAs a Structural Steel Fitter, you’ll use your expertise in welding and metal fabrication to assemble components with precision, following blueprints, work orders, and instructions. This position requires proficiency in various gas metal welding techniques and a strong understanding of materials such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized metals. You’ll work with welding processes such as GMAW, GTAW, SAW, and SMAW, ensuring high‑quality craftsmanship on every project.
A keen eye for detail, the ability to read and interpret blueprints, and knowledge of welding symbols and dimensioning are essential for success.
- Safely and efficiently operate assigned equipment.
- Read and understand drawings and blueprints and accurately execute work orders and quality assurance (QA) standards per job requirements.
- Identify, lay‑out, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications and/or prints using measuring devices such as straightedge, combination square, gauges, and tape measures to ensure fabrications and assemblies conform to quality standards and specified design.
- Tack‑weld or weld components and assemblies using welding equipment.
- Perform structural welding using a variety of procedures, such as groove weld, fillet weld, complete joint penetration, and partial joint penetration.
- Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
- Sit, talk, hear, read, and write.
- Walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- Stand for extended periods of time.
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Perform duties indoors in a shop setting with occasional work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- 2+ years of welding and fabrication experience in an industrial metal shop preferred.
- Must successfully complete a weld test required before employment.
- Ability to pass certifications in both GMAW and GTAW welding required within 30 days.
- Advanced ability in reading and interpreting blueprints, including dimensioning and welding symbols.
- Proficient in the use of manual plasma cutter and oxy‑fuel cutting torch.
- Possess advanced knowledge of metal plate types (steel, aluminum, stainless, galvanized, etc.) sizes, and shapes (beams, channels, angles, pipe, flat bar, etc.).
- Experience with the use of an overhead crane.
- Valid driver’s license required.
