CNC Machinist

This role involves setting up, operating, and monitoring CNC mills, lathes, lasers, and manual equipment to produce precision components from sheet metal, bars, and blocks. The CNC Machinist configures machines, interprets complex engineering documentation, ensures high-quality output through rigorous inspection, and performs routine maintenance and troubleshooting in a clean, small-shop environment.

Responsibilities

• Set up CNC machines by configuring CNC controllers, installing tooling or laser lenses, aligning fixtures, and loading raw materials such as sheet metal, bars, or blocks.
• Operate CNC mills, lathes, lasers, and manual equipment to run production programs safely and efficiently.
• Adjust feed rates and cutting speeds during operation to optimize performance and prevent errors or overheating.
• Monitor machine operations closely to identify and correct issues before they affect product quality or equipment performance.
• Read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, CAD models, schematics, and work orders to verify job requirements and ensure accurate machining.
• Inspect finished components using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and tape measures to confirm they meet specifications.
• Perform routine cleaning, calibration, and preventative maintenance on CNC and manual equipment to maintain reliability and accuracy.
• Troubleshoot minor mechanical or operational issues with machines and equipment, using test equipment and tools as needed.
• Document work performed as required by work orders and quality procedures, ensuring accurate and traceable records.
• Collaborate with team members in a small-shop environment to meet production goals and maintain a safe, organized workspace.

Essential Skills

• At least 5+ years of experience as a CNC machinist or in a closely related machining role.
• Proven ability to set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, lasers, and manual equipment.
• Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering blueprints, CAD models, schematics, and work orders.
• Hands-on experience configuring CNC controllers, installing tooling or laser lenses, aligning fixtures, and loading raw materials.
• Ability to adjust feed rates and cutting speeds to optimize machining performance and prevent errors or overheating.
• Competence in using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and tape measures for quality control.
• Experience with routine equipment cleaning, calibration, preventative maintenance, and minor troubleshooting.
• Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with mechanical systems, repair practices, and machine operation.
• Ability to use test equipment and tools, including multimeters, in support of troubleshooting and maintenance.
• Solid understanding of CNC programming concepts sufficient to run and adjust production programs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with lathes, mills, and CNC machines in a small-shop or job-shop environment.
• Experienced in mechanical work, repair, or maintenance supporting machining operations.
• Comfort working with schematics and technical documentation beyond basic blueprints.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality standards.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively to a small team.

Work Environment

The position is based in a small shop in Forest Hill with a clean and well-maintained work area. You will work primarily with CNC mills, lathes, lasers, and manual equipment, supported by precision measuring tools and test equipment such as multimeters. The standard schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, offering consistent daytime hours in a small-team setting.
