The Montgomery County Department of Parks, Northern Parks Division, is seeking experienced, dynamic, highly motivated team players to join us as a Principal Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker - CDL at Storm Water Management in Boyds, MD.

Storm Water Management contains over 75 Bioretention Areas, seven (7) Dams, over 67 Dry Ponds, 79 Trenches, and 41 wet ponds. The department works diligently to facilitate the reduction in volume and intensity of water that rushes into streams during a storm event by providing an area of short-term storage of stormwater.

What the Job will Involve
  • Operation of mid-sized to large equipment to include large mowers, tractors with attachments, backhoe, loader etc.
  • Operation of trucks, truck and trailer combinations, snowplows, dump trucks, trash trucks, etc.
  • Hauling heavy-duty tractors, skid steer or other large equipment using a trailer and CDL vehicles.
  • Occasional supervision of park maintenance employees performing general park maintenance tasks.
  • Responds to emergencies and inclement weather conditions such as hurricanes, blizzards, and earthquakes.
  • Operate riding mowers and tractors with attachments to mow brush, embankments, and swales to maintain stormwater assets
  • Plant native plants in bioretention areas and weed, prune, and mulch areas to ensure assets are clean and functioning properly
  • Work with a team in the field to restore bioretention and park services.
  • Cleans sand filters and infiltration trenches of debris, vegetation, and/or sediment.
  • Maintain inventories of supplies and materials.
  • Performs stormwater facilities preventive maintenance according to the Department of Environment Protection standards.
  • Maintain bio-retention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation and free of weeds.
Important Worker Characteristics
  • Considerable knowledge of work procedures, steps, tasks and techniques for standard groundskeeping including turf and trail maintenance; landscaping; building maintenance; safety techniques, procedures and requirements; cleaning agents, procedures and equipment; pesticide and fertilizer applications; automobile and equipment maintenance; basic methods and procedures for skilled trades support work; and Commission policies and procedures.
  • Skill and ability to operate automotive and heavy power equipment including trucks, truck and trailer combinations, farm tractors with attachments, bucket trucks with attachments, trash trucks, dump trucks, tank trucks, bobcats, front-end loaders, tree spades, turf rollers, backhoes, dozers, and trucks or vans with trailers; apply pesticides and fertilizers requiring certification; operate hand and power tools and related equipment; perform first aid, CPR and AED.
  • Skill in problem solving to measure dimensions, repair structures, and select appropriate attachments for equipment tasks.
  • Skill in communication to understand and convey information, read plans and diagrams, and explain safety and work procedures to crews.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and maintain working relationships as a team member.
  • Qualifications
    • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
    • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
    • Valid driver’s license in accordance with State and Commission rules and regulations. License must be unencumbered by restrictions that would limit driving duties.
    • Pass Commission medical examination.
    • Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions require within 12 months of hire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements and/or certification such as Maryland pesticide applicator, fertilizer applicator, and National Playground Safety Institute.
