** Active---## Job Overview The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is seeking a Sustainable Agriculture Physical Scientist to lead an independent research program on agricultural sustainability, spanning agrivoltaics, regenerative practices, forestry, soil and nutrient management, and water systems. This is a full-time, Trust Fund position based at SERC’s 2,650-acre Chesapeake Bay campus in Edgewater, MD, reporting to the Associate Director for Research.
The selected researcher will have access to SERC’s field and lab infrastructure, including instrumented experimental watersheds, the BiodiversiTREE and Functional Forests agroforestry experiments, a NEON site, a ForestGEO plot, the TEMPEST coastal forest experiment, and the Global Change Research Wetland. Duties include conducting physical science research in soil chemistry, geochemistry, biogeochemistry, or hydrology; building strategic partnerships with research institutions and the public;
developing competitive research proposals for federal agencies, foundations, and international sponsors; managing project budgets; and publishing and presenting findings.
Requirements:
* Ph.D. in a physical science, engineering, or math field with 24+ semester hours in physical science or related engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
* At least 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent
* Demonstrated experience in soil chemistry, geochemistry, biogeochemistry, or hydrology, and in agrivoltaics, agroecology, or sustainable agriculture
* Track record securing research funding and publishing data-rich research
