Marine Engine Technician Trainee; Internal

Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Natural Resources Police. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

The main purpose of this job is to provide assistance to NRP Marine Maintenance Section Employees and learn how to complete tasks (ranging from basic to advanced) regarding technical maintenance and preventative maintenance service related to a vessel, a vessel’s engines (both inboard and outboard, gasoline or diesel), heaters, air conditioners, electronic systems, operational systems and trailers needed to keep the NRP fleet and associated equipment operating in a safe and reliable condition with a constant high state of readiness.

The NRP’s vessel fleet consists of 20 large vessels (25 feet and over) and 144 small vessels (14-25 feet) that are equipped with various and different makes/models of engine propulsion systems. In addition, NRP has 133 vessel trailers. This position requires basic knowledge of vessel operations and the ability to learn with close supervision the maintenance of inboard and outboard fuel-injected engines, diesel engines, electronics, hydraulics, boat trailers, plumbing, electrical, and air conditioning systems of this fleet.

This position assists and learns from more skilled NRP Marine Maintenance Section Employees so the NRP’s vessel and trailer fleet is kept in top working order for all public safety emergencies, citizen reported calls for service, and a variety of state and federally funded regulatory, research and restoration programs within Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay, bay tributaries, lakes, and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Marine Engine Technician Trainee must possess the ability to follow instructions, the willingness to learn, and must be able to work in various weather and environmental conditions. The skills and knowledge developed as a Marine Engine Technician Trainee are an important foundation for future classification progression. When applied, these skills and abilities are vital to keeping the NRP’s vessel and trailer fleet in pristine working condition.

The Department of Natural Resources, Natural Resources Police, Support Services Bureau, in Stevensville, Maryland, is currently accepting applications for a Marine Engine Technician Trainee. This entry- level position is responsible for learning how to organize and carry out all technical maintenance needed to keep the NRP vessel fleet and associated equipment, including trailers, operating in a safe and good condition with a high state of readiness.

Marine Engine Technician Trainees then perform these learned skills in a supervised environment. Employees in this classification may work shifts, which include weekends and holidays.

• Education:
  
  Eighth grade.
• Experience:
  
  Two years of experience in marine, automotive, or truck engine repair.
• Notes:
  • Candidates may substitute education at an accredited vocational/technical high school in the curriculum of marine or automotive engine repair for up to two years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in engineman classification or engineman specialty codes in the vessel field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

• Marine Mechanic/Technician entry level certification (Suzuki outboard motor platform, and/or Yamaha, and/or Mercury outboard engine platform)
• Five (5) years of experience using a computer, and Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the Google Suite
• Experience related to travel lift operation
• Two (2) years of experience related to travel lift and forklift operation
• Must maintain confidentiality.
