    WE ARE LOOKING FOR

    The Department of General Services, Fleet Management Services is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Technician Lead for the Heavy Equipment Shop to perform advanced skilled inspection, maintenance and repairs on diesel, alternative fuel and/or gasoline powered heavy and related equipment and will function as a lead worker.

    This position serves as a lead worker and will provide on-the-job training, mentoring, and technical instruction to less experienced Mechanic Technicians. The employee will exercise independent, advanced-level judgment while performing inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a full array of medium and heavy-duty truck systems, including engines, fuel systems, exhaust systems, clutches, manual and automatic transmissions, power distribution systems, starting and charging systems, steering systems, air and hydraulic braking systems, air and hydraulic anti-lock braking systems (ABS), heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and chassis components.

    The position requires the ability to select and safely use the proper tools, equipment, diagnostic devices, service manuals, technical references, and efficient repair procedures to accurately complete repairs.

    In addition to advanced diagnostic and repair duties, this position serves as the shop lead for new vehicle intake, inspection, and preparation. Responsibilities include coordinating the receipt of new fleet assets, performing pre-delivery inspections, identifying and documenting deficiencies, coordinating warranty repairs with vendors, ensuring all required equipment and accessories are installed, and preparing vehicles for placement into County service.

    The position also serves as the lead for manufacturer campaigns, safety recalls, and technical service bulletins. This includes monitoring outstanding campaigns, coordinating repairs with dealerships and manufacturers, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring fleet compliance with all applicable recall and campaign requirements.

    As a senior technician, the employee will provide technical guidance to other mechanics, assist with troubleshooting complex repairs, help prioritize daily workloads, and promote safe and efficient shop operations. When operational needs require, the employee may serve in a leadership capacity by providing day-to-day direction to shop personnel and assisting with shop coordination during the absence of a Crew Chief to ensure continuity of operations.

    The Division of Fleet Management Services has three main worksite locations (Rockville, Silver Spring and Kensington), and the employee will work on specific shifts to be assigned, based on a 24/7-hour operation. Shifts may include nights and weekends and are…
