Fire Alarm Technician

Position Summary

The Fire Alarm Technician is a skilled field professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, testing, and servicing of fire alarm systems primarily on commercial project sites throughout the DMV service area. The position serves as the technical lead on assigned job sites, overseeing daily activities, coordinating with subcontractors and project management, and ensuring all work meets NFPA 72, NEC, and applicable local code requirements.

The incumbent is also responsible for the direct mentorship and on-the-job training of assigned apprentices and helpers.

The position serves as the technical lead on assigned job sites, overseeing daily activities, coordinating with subcontractors and project management, and ensuring all work meets NFPA 72, NEC, and applicable local code requirements.

The incumbent is also responsible for the direct mentorship and on-the-job training of assigned apprentices and helpers. This position reports directly to the Director of Operations, who also serves as Project Manager and oversees the commercial division. The Director of Operations reports to the Vice President, who oversees fire alarm operations and all functions under the Director of Operations. The Vice President reports to the President.

The following duties are considered essential functions of this position. This list is not exhaustive; the incumbent may be required to perform additional duties as assigned by management.

• Install, maintain, inspect, test, and troubleshoot fire alarm systems in accordance with job specifications, NFPA 72, the NEC, and all applicable state and local codes.
• Stay current with the latest editions of NFPA 72 and the NEC as they apply to fire alarm systems; apply updates to field work as required.
• Program, enable, and disable fire alarm systems as required during installation, commissioning, testing, and service calls.
• Respond to fire alarm system failures, inadvertent alarms, and emergency service calls; diagnose and resolve issues on-site in a timely and code‑compliant manner.
• Read and interpret fire alarm blueprints, drawings, and project specifications to guide installation and troubleshooting activities.
• Supervise and participate in AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) inspections; address all noted deficiencies promptly and completely.
• Order materials as needed and manage on-site inventory throughout the duration of each project.
• Operate a company vehicle safely and in accordance with all applicable traffic laws and company vehicle policies.

• Review project plans and fire alarm drawings; assign duties to apprentices and helpers to work efficiently and on schedule.
• Collaborate with the Director of Operations - who also serves as Project Manager and oversees the commercial division - to ensure projects are completed on time, within scope, and to established quality standards.
• Coordinate fire alarm work with other subcontractors and trades to ensure efficient use of time and materials and avoid scheduling conflicts.
• Complete and document service tickets accurately and promptly for all work performed outside of project scope or on individual service calls.
• Maintain high-quality standards and detailed documentation throughout all phases of each project.
