Youth Engagement Specialist ABOUT US

Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of youth and families in the Washington DC area. The agency includes 19 programs ranging from shelter for homeless youth to service-enriched transitional housing to street outreach, as well as a variety of counseling interventions using a competency-based youth development approach.

This is a Part-Time weekend only position that is Saturday and Sunday 3 to 11 PM EST.

ABOUT YOU
  • High School Diploma or GED required;
    Bachelor’s Degree preferred with specialty in psychology, counseling, or social work.
  • Must have at least 3-5 years of experience working with youth with significant mental health or behavioral challenges, preferably in a residential care setting.
  • Must be a creative, energetic, problem-solver, with a passion for working with young people. Reporting to the Program Manager, this is a part‑time, non‑exempt level position with an overnight schedule.
  • All candidates must possess a valid Driver’s License, clean driving record, and obtain and pass required background clearances.
  • Must be able to transport staff and/or clients, as needed.
ABOUT THE JOB
  • Perform rounds in and outside the building to engage with youth in their home environment, facilitate activities, provide counseling and support, and encourage adherence to community rules.
  • Provide crisis intervention and on‑site counseling to residents when necessary and appropriate.
  • Maintain supervision of the house, enforce house rules and ensure house safety; make regular inspections inside the building, outside the building, and check individual rooms and apartments routinely.
  • Assist with managing conflict between residents; de‑escalate and help residents reach compromise, documenting all incidents.
  • Coordinate with medical or government personnel as needed to assist in managing residents’ needs; engage Program Manager and complete required documentation, including Unusual Incidents forms in compliance with agency policy.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in safely and efficiently carrying out various emergency procedures in the case of fire, illness, accident, etc. and conduct drills to prepare or prevent such incidents.
  • Complete paperwork or data entry needs as directed by the Program Manager, including a 30‑minute increment log of community rounds and resident activities.
  • Produce specific, legible, concise handwritten notes and documentation, including house inspections, observations of non‑verbal client behavior, direct or indirect contact with clients, any unusual incidents, house logs, etc. that occur during your shift.
  • Provide administrative office coverage, answer calls, and provide thorough written documentation detailing the nature and purpose of all phone calls and visitors; maintain supervision of the house and residents, ensuring house rules are followed to ensure safety and security of the facility.
  • At times, perform light janitorial duties such as sweeping, mopping, taking out trash, and advise Program Manager of building maintenance needs.
  • Assist with shift coverage when schedule gaps present due to staff shortage.
  • Participate in required annual training (40 hours) mandated by licensing agency, Program Manager or Clinical Director.
  • Participate in regular supervision and staff meetings as assigned by Program Manager.
  • Keep all required clearances up to date.
  • Other duties as assigned.
