Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Senior C++ Software Engineer to build advanced software for national security, space, and health missions. You will design and implement high-performance C++ applications, collaborate with scientists and engineers to translate research into robust systems, and contribute to architecture, code reviews, and best practices. In APL's mission-driven, collaborative culture, you'll tackle complex real-world problems, mentor junior engineers, and grow through strong support for innovation, professional development, and advanced study.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and optimize complex C++ software solutions for mission-critical systems.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and domain experts to translate research concepts into robust software.
- Develop, test, and debug high-performance, reliable, and secure applications.
- Contribute to architecture decisions, code reviews, and software best practices.
- Document designs, interfaces, and test plans to support long-term maintainability.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.
Required Skills
- Modern C++ (C+/14/17 or later)
- Object-oriented design and design patterns
- Multithreaded and concurrent programming
- Linux/Unix development environments
- Debugging and profiling tools (e.g., gdb, Valgrind, perf)
- Version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows
- Software architecture and API design
- Unit testing and automated build systems (CMake, CI/CD)
- High-performance or real-time systems development
