Job Summary
The Class A CDL Utility Driver is responsible for safely transporting and delivering materials on designated local, regional, and interstate routes while providing operational support across multiple locations and service lines. This position serves as a versatile member of the transportation team, filling in on various routes as needed to support business operations, customer service commitments, and driver coverage requirements.
The Utility Driver will operate a variety of commercial vehicles and equipment, perform route collections and deliveries, maintain compliance with all DOT regulations, and ensure exceptional service to customers. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring a strong commitment to safe driving practices, operational excellence, and flexibility to adapt to changing business needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Safely load, transport, and deliver food waste and other designated materials on local, regional, and interstate routes.
* Complete multiple daily customer stops, typically ranging from 15-25 stops per day, according to assigned routing schedules.
* Operate Class A commercial vehicles, including 30'-45' open-top dump trailers and other company equipment.
* Operate both manual and automatic transmission vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations and all federal, state, and local laws.
* Serve as a relief and support driver by covering routes, locations, and assignments based on operational needs.
* Operate manual and electric pallet jacks as required for loading and unloading activities.
* Utilize pressure washers to clean containers and bins while ensuring customer sites remain clean, organized, and free of debris.
* Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
* Conduct minor repairs and maintenance using hand tools on company containers, bins, and equipment as needed.
* Maintain overall cleanliness and professional appearance of trucks, trailers, and assigned equipment.
* Accurately utilize electronic logging devices (ELDs) and maintain DOT-compliant driver logs.
* Complete and submit required paperwork, including service tickets, contamination reports, inspection reports, fuel receipts, and maintenance documentation.
* Communicate professionally with customers, vendors, dispatch, and operations personnel to ensure efficient service execution.
* Report service concerns, equipment issues, customer requests, accidents, incidents, and injuries immediately to management and the Safety Department.
* Participate in safety meetings, training programs, company briefings, and continuing education initiatives.
* Utilize computers, tablets, and mobile devices for communication, training, expense reporting, route management, and operational updates.
* Maintain compliance with all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and DOT requirements.
* Demonstrate flexibility to work various routes, schedules, shifts, and geographic service areas based on business needs.
* Travel and operate in interstate commerce as required, regardless of regular route assignment.
Qualifications
* Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
* Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
* Minimum age of 21 years.
* Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Card.
* Previous experience operating tractor-trailer combinations preferred.
* Experience with open-top dump trailers, roll-off, waste hauling, or similar equipment preferred.
* Ability to operate both manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
* Strong understanding of DOT regulations and Hours of Service requirements.
* Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and maneuver up to 50 pounds.
* Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
* Ability to work independently and adapt to changing schedules and assignments.
