Job Description

Our

Purpose:

St. John’s Lutheran School exists in Christ to equip and educate students by developing the mind and engaging the heart to impact communities for Christ.

Accountability:
The teacher is a minister of our congregation. They work cooperatively as a team member with all other personnel of the school and church. The teacher’s supervisor is the principal. The teacher will meet with the principal and senior pastor each June to review non‑school assignments in the congregation’s ministry and recommend changes to the boards responsible for those ministries for the year ahead.

Accountability is to the chairperson of those boards.

Personal

Qualifications:

The teacher associates closely with God through prayer, study of the Scriptures, and regular church and Communion attendance. They give ample evidence of a lifestyle that reflects a dynamic relationship with Christ. They are open‑minded, tolerant, and have a happy, positive outlook. They are sensitive to the needs of others, care about feelings of others, show Christian concern for all, maintain confidence, and are respectful of others.

They use correct language and written forms. They are tactful, warm, courteous, and are effective listeners. Their physical and emotional health is good, they are poised, punctual, and enthusiastic. They can articulate clearly the objectives of our Christian school and evidence a love for teaching children. They look presentable and attend and participate in church and community activities.

Professional

Qualifications:

The teacher holds teaching ministry certification from our national church body or intends to meet the requirements. They hold at least a bachelor’s degree in education. They are certified by the state department of education or will soon be able to receive such certification. They understand and support the congregation’s program of education for all grade levels.

Teaching Position

Purpose:

The teacher will instruct the assigned grade, about 25 students in a self‑contained classroom, responsible for teaching all the assigned grade subjects.

Essential Performance Responsibilities

  • Develop and administer school curriculum consistent with St. John’s Lutheran Church & Schools goals and objectives.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small‑group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize instruction time.
  • Teach all required subject matter as assigned to the grade level, including reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning, modify instructional methods for individual needs, including students with special needs; conduct small‑group instruction as needed.
  • Instruct students in principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters as applicable by law.
  • Continuously acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
  • Maintain accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures.
  • Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure students conform with the school’s standards and SJLS policies and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other elementary professional staff, evaluate and assess curriculum, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
