- Supervises correction officers and Correction Sergeants/Counselors assigned to one or more posts or special duties (e.g., tool control, armory, count office, mail room, transportation, visitation)
- Instructs and evaluates CO’s
- Assigns staff to posts and enforces post orders assignments
- Ensures CO’s and correction sergeants/counselors are alert, attentive, and properly placed by inspecting each post
- Enforces the utilization of body‑worn cameras and proper use of body scanners on the incarcerated population
- Conducts surveillance security of institution and property
- Prevents escapes, apprehends escapees, and/or prevents incidents threatening the security and safety of the facility, incarcerated population, staff, or general public, including use of physical force, unarmed self‑defense, firearms, or other force as necessary
- Makes constant rounds to inspect cells, shops, recreation areas, and dining rooms for cleanliness, compliance with safety regulations, contraband, and general security
- Monitors and directs custody operations during movements of inmates to meals, infirmary, schools, worksites, and other locations
- Attends monthly unit meetings and assists the Correction Specialist in supervising Correction Officers in accordance with the unit plan
- Assists in supervising and arranging supervision of meaningful activities
- Assists in developing and enforcing memorandums of understanding between service departments and units; responds to staff concerns
- Ensures availability and utilization of personnel protective equipment (PPE) for Correction Officers
- Responds to the needs of incarcerated persons
- Manages disputes and seeks resolution involving the incarcerated population; reports complaints of abuse by employees
- Participates in a team approach to unit planning, operation, and problem solving; responds to emergencies and security alerts
- Gathers information and writes reports covering accidents, fires, and disciplinary actions of employees and inmates
- Completes employee and incarcerated worker performance evaluations
- Schedules work assignments, population bed movements, meals, educational and recreational activities
- Serves on rules infraction board or other committees as required
- Ensures safety and security of equipment and supplies (e.g., radios, vehicles, restraint devices, body worn cameras, body scanners, mailroom scanner, computers)
- Makes periodic rounds

High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 years training or 2 years experience in enforcement of security measures for the detention of felons or criminally insane consumers in a controlled environment; and 6 months training or 6 months experience in supervisory principles/techniques or in providing work direction and training to other employees. If assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of the Revised Code, a commercial driver's license is required.
Alternately, high school diploma or G.E.D.; 12 months experience as a Correction Sergeant/Counselor, 46532. If assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01, a commercial driver's license is required. Or meet the equivalent of the Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment described above.
