Reporting to the Quality Manager, the Laboratory Test Lead is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the assigned laboratory. The role includes leading a team to perform test procedures, record and report test results promptly and accurately, assure regulatory compliance, and deliver high‑quality testing performance. The Lead develops laboratory standard processes, mentors staff, maintains laboratory visibility, enhances customer service, and advises on testing methods and regulatory reviews.
Summaryof Duties
- Collaborate and lead the creation of innovative test methodologies, review product/test article designs, and set up tests for aircraft interior products. Tests cover environmental, accelerated life, static and dynamic loading, material characterization, fire properties, acoustic, operational, electrical, refrigeration, airflow, and plumbing systems.
- Review, coordinate, and conduct tests at prototype and serial production levels for qualification or certification of aircraft interior products.
- Oversee environmental, operational, and performance tests on electrical and electromechanical products, including DO160 and other standards.
- Conduct flammability testing (Bunsen burner, heat release, smoke density, toxicity, containment).
- Perform material characterization tests on composite panels, adhesive properties, and accelerated aging.
- Execute load testing (static, robustness, abuse, dynamic, impact) using appropriate equipment.
- Carry out accelerated life tests for mechanical assemblies, endurance testing, and temperature/humidity cycling.
- Design, fabricate, and maintain test apparatus and equipment while leading technicians.
- Develop, coordinate, and document test plans, procedures, and reports.
- Perform calibration, preventive maintenance, and record management of test equipment.
- Coordinate repair or replacement of laboratory equipment with Facilities and manufacturers.
- Provide technical expertise during product development reviews to ensure compliance matrix requirements.
- Develop and update standard processes for laboratory operations.
- Expand lab capability by training on new equipment or setups.
- Collaborate with Engineering to analyze designs, conduct root cause analyses, and support MER and DFMEA reviews.
- Oversee test technicians, schedule work, monitor tasks, train staff, and contribute to performance reviews.
- Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating staff, and recommend promotions or disciplinary actions.
- Coach and mentor team to enhance internal customer service and satisfaction.
- Provide orientation and training for testing personnel and evaluate performance.
- Ensure laboratory availability visibility and track KPIs for continuous improvement.
- Prepare laboratory for audits or inspections, provide reports, and maintain regulatory documentation.
- Gather employee sentiment and identify opportunities for relationship management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering, or related field; or 15 years of experience in engineering, testing, or related field.
- Minimum 10 years in Aerospace Manufacturing, Design, Analysis, and/or testing environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Proficient with CAD, PLM Systems, and computational analytical software.
- Proficient with programming in high‑level or graphic languages such as C, Java, or LabVIEW.
- Proven ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Experience working with aircraft OEMs.
- Knowledge of testing and manufacturing processes used in aerospace.
- Good knowledge of testing and certification requirements for common aerospace components.
- Familiarity with aviation regulatory requirements (FAA, EASA).
- Excellent organization and communication skills.
- Business acumen for understanding budgets and resource programs.
- Experience with problem solving, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
