Overview
The Merchandise Manager (MM) leads Ulta Beauty’s store operations, driving sales growth, inventory management, and operational compliance while fostering a high‑performing team.
General Summary & ScopeThe MM reports to the Operations Manager, guides a team of Task Associates, and is accountable for shipment, replenishment, omni‑channel, price changes, and markdowns. Success in this role requires a passion for operational excellence, a drive for results, and the ability to navigate unforeseen complexity.
PrincipalDuties & Responsibilities Performance
- Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed the store’s goals for retail and service sales, guest loyalty, payroll, omni‑channel and retail shrink.
- Drive profitability through operational excellence, top‑line sales growth, and expense control.
- Use store forecast and payroll budgets to support scheduling, communicate needs to the GM, and achieve sales and payroll goals.
- Review, analyze, and respond to financial and operational reports including store visits and audit results.
- Leverage company programs, tools, and resources to improve performance.
- Perform makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations to enhance sales and guest experience.
- Stay informed on industry trends and product benefits to better serve guests.
- Maintain prompt, regular attendance and hold staff accountable to the Ulta Beauty attendance policy.
- Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
- Build a highly engaged team that embodies the Ulta Beauty brand through collaboration, open communication, and clear priorities.
- Create an inclusive environment that encourages growth and engagement.
- Support associate development through training, competency‑based feedback, coaching, succession planning, and individual development plans.
- Participate in ongoing training, including brand and category education.
- Model operational excellence by leading by example and sharing best practices.
- Execute the Guest Engagement Leader program to drive business results across all Annual Performance Goals (APGs) metrics.
- Be knowledgeable of and ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards.
- Adhere to and enforce the dress code.
- Use the scheduling tool to adjust schedules and manage attendance during shifts.
- Use the task management tool to prioritize and execute store workload, including resets, pricing updates, inventory tasks, and replenishment.
- Ensure execution of all operational focuses: shipment, replenishment, omni‑channel, price changes, and markdowns.
- Protect company assets and minimize loss through safety, inventory control, cash management, and loss prevention procedures.
- Execute day‑to‑day inventory control processes and complete theft reporting as required.
- Support continuous improvement by advocating company initiatives and technology.
- Communicate business trends, opportunities, and challenges to field leadership.
- High school diploma preferred.
- 1–2+ years of fast‑paced retail or relevant management experience.
- Financial management experience driving top‑line sales, interpreting data, managing payroll budgets, and controlling expense.
- Retail management experience monitoring inventory, achieving operational excellence, and executing merchandising directives.
- Leadership experience attracting, developing, and motivating top talent while managing change.
- Proficient with basic technology (POS, Microsoft Office, Apple devices).
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to react under pressure, use good judgment, and remain flexible.
Position Requirements
- Work a flexible full‑time schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Shifts may begin as early as 5:00 a.m.
- Availability to work shifts on Sundays and Mondays.
- Continuous mobility throughout the store during shift.
- Continuous and/or frequent bending, pulling, pushing, crouching, stooping, reaching, and twisting.
