Overview

The Merchandise Manager (MM) leads Ulta Beauty’s store operations, driving sales growth, inventory management, and operational compliance while fostering a high‑performing team.

General Summary & Scope

The MM reports to the Operations Manager, guides a team of Task Associates, and is accountable for shipment, replenishment, omni‑channel, price changes, and markdowns. Success in this role requires a passion for operational excellence, a drive for results, and the ability to navigate unforeseen complexity.

Principal

Duties & Responsibilities Performance
  • Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed the store’s goals for retail and service sales, guest loyalty, payroll, omni‑channel and retail shrink.
  • Drive profitability through operational excellence, top‑line sales growth, and expense control.
  • Use store forecast and payroll budgets to support scheduling, communicate needs to the GM, and achieve sales and payroll goals.
  • Review, analyze, and respond to financial and operational reports including store visits and audit results.
  • Leverage company programs, tools, and resources to improve performance.
  • Perform makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations to enhance sales and guest experience.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and product benefits to better serve guests.
  • Maintain prompt, regular attendance and hold staff accountable to the Ulta Beauty attendance policy.
People
  • Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.

Process
  • Be knowledgeable of and ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Adhere to and enforce the dress code.
  • Use the scheduling tool to adjust schedules and manage attendance during shifts.
  • Use the task management tool to prioritize and execute store workload, including resets, pricing updates, inventory tasks, and replenishment.
  • Ensure execution of all operational focuses: shipment, replenishment, omni‑channel, price changes, and markdowns.
  • Protect company assets and minimize loss through safety, inventory control, cash management, and loss prevention procedures.
  • Execute day‑to‑day inventory control processes and complete theft reporting as required.
  • Support continuous improvement by advocating company initiatives and technology.
  • Communicate business trends, opportunities, and challenges to field leadership.
Job Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma preferred.
Experience
  • 1–2+ years of fast‑paced retail or relevant management experience.
  • Financial management experience driving top‑line sales, interpreting data, managing payroll budgets, and controlling expense.
  • Retail management experience monitoring inventory, achieving operational excellence, and executing merchandising directives.
  • Leadership experience attracting, developing, and motivating top talent while managing change.
Skills
  • Proficient with basic technology (POS, Microsoft Office, Apple devices).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to react under pressure, use good judgment, and remain flexible.

Position Requirements
  • Work a flexible full‑time schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Shifts may begin as early as 5:00 a.m.
  • Availability to work shifts on Sundays and Mondays.
