The registered nurse will provide care in a neuroscience med/surg unit. The shift is 18:45 to 07:15, 3 times a week. Every other weekend coverage is required. Staffing ratios are 1 nurse to 6 patients during night shifts. Patient age groups include adults and geriatrics. The medication system used is Omnicell. Patient diagnoses include stroke, TIA, seizure, syncope, pneumonia, chest pain, dialysis, acute kidney failure, post-heart catheterization, respiratory failure, encephalopathy, CHF, and sepsis.
This unit focuses on the inpatient care of stroke and TIA patients while also accommodating higher acuity med-surg patients. Special procedures performed on the unit include peritoneal dialysis and continuous bladder irrigation. Required skills include managing ports, BiPAP/CPAP management, blood product administration, central line blood draws, and chest tube care. Nurses will also manage feeding tubes, insulin, and have experience with telemetry and non-invasive airway management.
The facility has interdisciplinary support from IV teams, physical therapy, respiratory services, interpretation services, phlebotomy, radiology, social services, and pharmacy. The daily census for this unit is approximately 27 patients. Travelers must adhere to floating requirements based on census needs, and competencies for each unit must be documented.
