Position: Strategic Tribal Comptroller - CPA (Financial Leader)

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is seeking an experienced and strategic Tribal Comptroller to lead accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and fiscal stewardship across Tribal government and grant-funded programs. This role serves as a key financial leader, supporting sound decision-making, regulatory compliance, organizational sustainability, and the Tribe’s long-term priorities.

The ideal candidate is a CPA with strong governmental, nonprofit, tribal, or grant-funded financial experience; a demonstrated ability to lead accounting teams; and a commitment to integrity, accuracy, transparency, and responsible stewardship of Tribal resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and oversee accounting operations, including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, revenues, expenditures, cash management, and banking activities.
  • Lead the development, administration, monitoring, and analysis of annual budgets, including governmental, operating, and grant-funded programs.
  • Prepare financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, forecasts, variance analyses, grant financial reports, and other financial information for leadership and authorized stakeholders.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and accountability measures to safeguard Tribal assets and promote fiscal integrity.
  • Coordinate and support annual audits and other financial reviews, including schedules, reconciliations, inquiries, corrective actions, and recommendations.
  • Support compliance with applicable Tribal laws, policies, federal requirements, grant conditions, and regulatory obligations.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, training, and technical support to finance staff, managers, and stakeholders to strengthen financial accountability across the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required;
    Master’s degree such as an MBA or MPA preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including financial reporting, audits, and internal controls.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience managing accounting or finance teams.
  • Experience in complex, highly regulated, governmental, tribal, or grant-funded environments preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, internal controls, audit processes, and financial systems.
