The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to provide hands‑on leadership across key accounting operations, including general ledger management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash reconciliations, and post-award grant accounting. Reporting to the Tribal Comptroller, this role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting strong internal controls, leading the monthly close process, and supervising the daily work of the accounting team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional with strong technical accounting experience, supervisory skills, and a commitment to accurate, ethical, and mission‑driven financial stewardship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, prepaid expenses, accruals, cash reconciliations, and post-award grant accounting.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of accounting data, the general ledger, and the trial balance.
  • Lead the monthly close process and support timely, accurate month‑end and year‑end closings in accordance with GAAP.
  • Supervise, direct, and review the work of accounting staff responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grant accounting.
  • Ensure accurate invoice processing, timely payments, receivables management, grant drawdowns, cash receipts, and reconciliation of accounting modules within the financial system.
  • Oversee weekly payroll processing and related tax and compliance filings, including coordination between payroll, finance, and human resources systems.
  • Evaluate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in collaboration with the Tribal Comptroller, and recommend improvements where needed.
  • Provide leadership and support during the annual financial statement audit.
  • Coach, mentor, and guide accounting staff to support positive outcomes, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform additional accounting assignments and related duties as requested.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience managing federal awards and accounting teams, including supervisory experience.
  • At least four years of experience with responsibility for an overall accounting system and the accuracy of the trial balance.
  • Experience in governmental and/or nonprofit fund accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Extensive experience with computerized financial accounting systems, spreadsheets, and financial reporting applications.
  • Experience working with more than one financial accounting system during one’s career.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently and with sound judgment.
  • High level of integrity, ethics, accuracy, and confidentiality.
Preferred Qualification Work Location

This position is based at the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Government and Community Center, located at 483 Great Neck Road South, Mashpee, MA 02649.
