The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is seeking a GIS Administrator to manage, maintain, and advance the Tribe’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in support of the Tribal Historic Preservation Department and other Tribal programs. This role is central to protecting and organizing spatial data related to cultural resources, land use, environmental stewardship, broadband infrastructure, emergency management, and Tribal sovereignty initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical GIS expertise, sound data governance practices, and a respectful approach to handling culturally sensitive information.

the Role

This position will support system administration, geodatabase management, mapping and application development, and cross‑departmental GIS services.

Responsibilities
  • Administer and maintain ArcGIS Online and support transition planning from ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Manage geodatabases, including SQL Server/PostGIS environments
  • Support cultural resource mapping, archaeological site protection, and Section 106 compliance workflows
  • Maintain GIS datasets related to land use, environmental monitoring, broadband infrastructure, emergency management, and other Tribal programs
  • Develop GIS applications, dashboards, web maps, and data governance standards
  • Ensure proper metadata practices, data sovereignty, and secure handling of culturally sensitive information
  • Provide GIS support and training to Tribal staff across departments
  • Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies on data sharing, reporting, and compliance
  • Conduct GPS field data collection and integrate survey data into GIS systems
  • Troubleshoot GIS issues and maintain system reliability and performance
  • Support departmental capacity building and other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional GIS experience, including system administration responsibilities
  • Strong experience with Esri ArcGIS Online, web maps, feature services, and data management tools
  • Experience managing geodatabases and SQL-based data environments
  • Strong knowledge of cartography, spatial analysis, and GIS best practices
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and ability to support non-technical users
  • Willingness to work toward passing the GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam
Preferred Skills
  • Master’s degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Planning, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise, Portal, Server, or federated services
  • GISP certification or Esri technical certifications
  • Experience with Python, Arcade, or GIS automation tools
  • Experience working with Tribal governments or Indigenous communities
  • Knowledge of Tribal Historic Preservation, cultural resource management, or Section 106 processes
  • Experience with broadband infrastructure mapping, utility GIS, or AutoCAD
Pay range and compensation package

This is a full-time, grant‑funded, term‑limited position with an anticipated one‑year duration and the possibility of renewal based on funding and project needs. This position is not benefit‑eligible. A valid driver’s license is required for fieldwork and travel between Tribal sites.
