Overview:

The High School Dance Team Head Coach is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the school's dance team program. The coach will develop student‑athletes both technically and personally, promote school spirit, ensure academic accountability, and maintain a positive, inclusive team culture. The position requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and a commitment to student development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and communicate a clear vision for the dance team aligned with school values
  • Plan and conduct structured practices, choreography sessions, and conditioning workouts
  • Establish team rules, expectations, and performance standards
  • Conduct tryouts and select team members in a fair and transparent manner
  • Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, and respect
  • Prepare team for athletic events, pep rallies, showcases, and competitions
  • Register and coordinate participation in competitions (e.g. local, regional and national)
  • Travel with the team and supervise students during events
  • Ensure compliance with competition rules and school policies
  • Coordinate travel, supervision, and student safety during events
  • Emphasize strength training, flexibility, conditioning, and injury prevention
  • Monitor academic eligibility and reinforce academic expectations
  • Develop leadership skills among team captains and members
  • Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive representation of the school
  • Manage program budget, fundraising, and inventory (uniforms, costumes, equipment)
  • Communicate effectively with parents, administration, and Student Activities staff
  • Coordinate music licensing, choreography approvals, and uniform/costume planning
  • Ensure compliance with school district policies and state athletic association rules
  • Complete required paperwork, eligibility reports, and travel documentation
  • Promote the dance team program within the school and community
  • Lead youth clinics, camps, or recruitment events
  • Maintain a positive public image for the team
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5 years dance coaching experience preferred
  • Competitive dance background strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of competition standards and judging criteria
  • Experience working with high school‑aged students
  • Strong choreography and technical instruction ability
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
